Stock is ok if it is in good shape. All the parts to rebuild are easly obtained from your local A parts house. We often shorten the pitman arm 1 1/2"- makes steering a little easier.
i've been running an A box in my A sedan for a little over a year. i plan on changing mine over to something else soon. my starter is on the drivers side so clearance is my biggest issue and why i used the A box in the first place. i ended up moving it forward 3 1/2" and had to angle it back a few degrees. it's worked well, just a little sloppy. the F-1 works well but the steering shaft enters the box at the bottom, whereas the A enters from the top. sometimes you will have clearance issues. The F-1 would definitley be better than the A box, or even a later F-100...or reversed corvair...or i hear toyota boxes work nicely too
Gee,I am just not sure I'd trust my steering to something 75 years old. Even if it was a new repro unit, it wasn't designed to run at your speed or horsepower. Just a thought.
That's a wierd statement! A stock Model A steering box (7 tooth or 2 tooth) can more than capably handle the speed and thrust of what Zimm is wanting to do. It is evident you have never been around a rebuilt one. Maybe you should drive down to Tennessee and let me educate you & Peanut on how they should be.
