Cross steering is when the pitman arm moves a drag link that goes perpendicular to the ch***is rails & moves the spindle on the opposite side as the steering box which is tied, with a tie rod (imagine that!) to the other spindle. ('35-48 Ford) Drag steering is when the pitman arm moves a drag link that is parallel to the ch***is moving the spindle on the same side as the steering box. (Pre -'35 Ford & F1-100 trucks)
It has to do with steering box location (cowl or frame mount) and drag link placement. Speedway Motors has a good explaination on their website (diagram).SE
Josh, Thank you very much for the pictures and everyone else too ... My question now is ... On the 39 Master Deluxe ... I will be doing the Must II IFS boltin type (ch***isengineeringinc.com one) with the power steering. This will then be a traditional steering correct? and the real question which ch***isengineeringinc.com motor mounts would I get?
Actually, the steering box can be mounted on the frame on both setups. Someone will hopefully post a diagram for ya!
HAHAHAHAHA F'n Cl***ic! I thought VA was where the movie "deliverance" Was fillmed...................
Why are you worrying about cross steering or draglink steering if you've already decided to go with a MII setup? MII uses a RACK...which is mounted to the crossmember itself! Seeing as how its an IFS then it can hardly be considered traditional steering...in relation to the style of TRADITIONAL spoken around here anyway. 70's traditional I suppose...but hardly 40's, 50's or 60's... The definition of cross steer or draglink doesn't really apply either. You really need to get info from the company your buying from so you can get this all worked out in your head before you start cutting or anything! If your looking for a traditional look then you need to do some research as an MII just isn't gonna cut it. If trad isn't the driving force than it usually works fine...just make sure your getting the system from a good company! I have no experience with "Compe***ion Engineering" so I can't make a comment on their products.
MII is no way traditional but will work well for the 39 chev. MII has no steering box. WHERE DO THESE GUYS COME FROM? My question now is ... On the 39 Master Deluxe ... I will be doing the Must II IFS boltin type (ch***isengineeringinc.com one) with the power steering. This will then be a traditional steering correct? and the real question which ch***isengineeringinc.com motor mounts would I get?[/quote]
thank you all for the information. I am just trying to learn about restoring and building a hotrod and deliverance (the movie as well as the book) was based in Georgia.
Not criticizing, but is the steering box and pitman arm as low as it looks? Nicely done rolling frame. Don't you run a yellow with red scallops 37 Ford coupe? I think you know my brother Louie (Henry J drag racer) I met you at the first Santa Paula rod run several years back.
Hit a bump, an undesired steering input occurs. The usual cause is the differing arcs the suspension swings in as compared to the arc the drag link steers in. Commonly found in solid axle cars with long radius rods or split wishbones and short fore & aft oriented drag links. Or . . . the opposite.
Hey C9---Yea--thats me. The 37 has almost 100,000 miles on it now--still runs great. The steering box on the ch***is is ok---the pitman arm was low,so it got "m***aged"---ok now--drag link inline with steering arm now---Damn, you got a good eye! Here's a couple of picks---the start of the 37 and 29---and the "twins" today--not much miles on the 29--still working out the bugs---KiwiKev has driven the 29 more than I have!!
