on the internet You can also buy fake stories about your car's bloodline and glory days to tell at the show-n-shine, they include pictures of a 1920's era barn with your car photo-shopped in.

It seems cars should'nt have flames coming out from the hood but people paint them on all the time. It's an effect.Like any other paint technique.I might not understand why a person would want their roof to look like grandmas tablecloth but I can appreciate the painters skills when he pulls the lace technique off. Most of you should be happy he wants paint on his car. It's your car, seen through your eyes,If it makes you happy paint it any way you want.

try this on a peace of sheet metal. Choose a dark color take base coat unreduced and paint it on with a co**** brush. let it cure all the way till next day. choose a color that is slightly lighter than prior color and sprey on with a paint gun regular reduction. let cure then sand paint with 600 grit wet till bottom color comes through. then using superduty compound and a buffing wheel buff and burn paint through all the edges. then soak a rag in laquer thinner ring it out real good and roll in a ball press it on the paint all over very fast. then you can clear coat it for gloss or add flattener to the clear about 75 percent flattener 25 percent clear for a semi flat finish.

Everybody loves cars with real patina .....right? I do

Everbody loves cars that have survived and were actually built back in the day....right? I do

What's the difference between building a car to look like it was built in a certain time period or a car that has been weathered over time. Both are fakes. Look at the guys that do period perfect cars. Who are they trying to fool? It's the same as trying to fool someone into thinking fake patina is real.

Just about everything we do is fake. Think about it!

Have a great faking day! :)

Here's the truck pinched from your profile ...

I dunno , I'm a fan of patina , but its pretty hard to get it looking right . Why not bare metal it , then blow it over with clear laquer , that'd look cool . Unless its full of pudding of course .

If you must fake it , then here's a good example for you . As far as I can recall its a gl*** body , brush painted , then grinder fillings sprinkled onto the wet paint . Fooled loadsa people over here ...

I know that I want to keep my appearance on my ole GMC. It has Real Rust with Real Dents and Paint loss. I sure would like to know how to keep it from getting any worse than it is without ruining the Real Patina it has gotten over 50 years of service. I hear that the Rust Killer stuff you can buy will change the Rust from the color it is now to BLACK because it keeps the Rust from getting air. I do not know this for sure though. Good Luck to you on the Painting on Patina! Sounds like ALOT of work, but might be worth it I guess.

I think nice patina only happens in arid parts of the country. Here, in the northeast, you go from great paint to great rust holes, which seems to happen overnight. There is no patina here. If you want it, you have to create it. It's all part of the artistic process of building a hot rod (and it IS art, in its purest form). It can also be a great tool for people like me who just never can get the body work & paint right. I always screw it up. With the created patina deal, you can't screw it up! That's the beauty of it. I might try it with the '33 truck rod I'm building & if I don't like it I'll just cover it with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer or JDBB or whatever (but not shiney paint, because it'll only frustrate me). Whew, now I feel better.

I`m getting mixed messages here.My truck has a 47 flathead motor,50 trans and rearend,49 rad,29 grill shell 32 headlites,59 taillites,cutdown50seat,hell i even run a generator. And i am being called fake for wanting to paint it to look old. I worked in a body shop in the early sixties and i don`t remember any two tone pink primered 55 chevy`s do you? All it is is paint. If i don`t like it i can repaint it.Thanks to all of you with helpful tips. Trends have brought hot rodding to this point. So if you don`t like trends get out of the way or get run over. Ants

  22. I just re-read this whole thread, and not once were you called fake. Most of the ribbing is good natured, but the fact is, and always has been, there is no accounting for taste. Some will always like what you do, and some will always hate it. Faux patina, musicians' obituaries, the rat word, Boyd, "How do you like my VW?", etc are always going to get heavy action here.

    PS

    I kinda like your truck.

Ok, at the risk of getting "flamed", I'll tell you how I faux painted this '40 sedan to look like the old original laquer .... Most people who saw this car thought it was original paint!

    1. Red primer (the darker the better)- the original laquer primer was kindof a brown color.

    2. I chose a black top coat, so I bought rattlecan SEMI-gloss (doesn't really matter what kind, but Rustoleum stay tacky for a loooong time). Spray over the primer, but put in on thinner over the natural "wear" areas of the body (i.e.: door tops, tops of fenders, roof, front of hood, etc.).

    3. When the topcoat dries, take a rag (I used an old t-shirt) and rub the **** out of the paint, giving it a smooth, dull shine. I used a scotchbrite pad in areas where I wanted more wear, but 220 sandpaper will work too.

    4. When old cars sit around in barns or garages, they always seem to get some paint spilled on them somewhere, so pick a nice color and flick some paint across the body, but do it SPARINGLY!!!! Don't go nuts, just one or two small spots should do.

    5. Now, grab a rattlecan of tan paint and red primer. Spray some on the fuzzy side of an old sweatshirt and dab on paint in the rusty areas, overlapping the colors. If you want it to look like sirface rust working through the paint, rub the tan onto the paint in a few areas; it'll stay in the fisheyes of the topcoat and look like rust pitting.

    6. Throw a few scratches in arount the door handles, hood, fenders, etc. (Old cars always seem to have a nice long scratch down one or both sides). Don't go crazy, you just want it to look used.

If you want actual rust, sand through the paint in a couple spots and spray the bare metal with vinegar, letting it run down the paint.

    Here's a couple pics:
