Hey everone, As you can see from my post count i'm a newbie not only here but also to hot rodding only owning a '29 roadster for just over a year, and i would love to ask for your help. We have very few Model A Sports Coupes around in Australia that haven't been truned into something else ie roadsters, the A 5 window coue etc..., and i've found one and plan to rod it over the next few years, the plan is too have a Sport Coupe not cut the roof and turn it into a roadster - already got one I have searched the forums here quite extensivley and found some great photos and tech articles that were posted some years back that have given me great inspiration. Well i'm putting the call out for some more pics that may help with ideas and inspriation. Any help is appreciated.
there's a great one in here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129164 and there were a couple pics elsewhere, do a search for "Hayride", there's a thread with a ton of pictures. I'll see if I can find any other SPort coupe pics in my collection
i will post pics when i get home, probly have 10 of em.... im buildin a 29... and yes, mine will have the top and all eventually
heres a few like promised,... mine is the last, dont look like much, but it will by spring when its on the road!!
Well i finally got myself, all set up here are some pics of what i am working with, since the shots have taken 2 inches out of the roof and doors. It is not sitting at ride height nor on the rims i'll be using but i think you get the idea, also the original boot coverted to the dickie seat has been converted back !!
Here's Dad's with some "before" pictures. If you want to talk to him about how he did it, PM me and I'll send you his email address. (links to these two since the pics are huge) http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i97/TeamTumbleweeds/Family%20Rides/?action=view¤t=28start.jpg&refPage=all&imgAnch=imgAnch27 http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i97/TeamTumbleweeds/Family%20Rides/?action=view¤t=29mockup.jpg&refPage=all&imgAnch=imgAnch24 Here is how he drove it for about a year while he did the top and interior from scratch. Had a BBC in it from around 1984 until a couple of years ago when he went to a 331 hemi. The chassis started out Model A...as I recall, he boxed it, added some cross bracing, added a wrecking yard M-II front end, then on the rear he initially ran an early Pontiac (the BIG one) and later switched to 9" Ford... both cases he made a semi-elliptic system with a suspension that's sort of like a wishbone and sorta not (the term to describe it escapes me now), The '55 in the background with its ass in the air is mine, by the way. That picture sure brings back a lot of memories. The rear wheels came with the '75 station wagon that he robbed the engine out of... the front wheels came on the M-II that he robbed the front end out of. Dad was extraordinarily cheap back then... and now that I have my own kid to support, I know why. Here it is now on its 3rd paint scheme and with a new black top and a scratch built chassis. He also sometime along the way put in the engine turned firewall, which I'm pretty sure he did using the "old engine valve in a drill press" trick he taught me way back then. This time he diddled around with some subtle black flames that this picture didn't capture too well. How he did the headers: http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i97/TeamTumbleweeds/Family%20Rides/?action=view¤t=hemihead.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch9 Hope that helps a little.
I think it's a Raleigh - ladies frame, with Sturmey Archer hub gear and roller lever brakes. Unless you're referring to the aeroplane engine...
This pic was taken at the Ballarat Road Rodders annual 1/8th mile drags. Pretty cool little car, built on a budget and not afraid to give it a hard time. Binga
Bern, they seemed much more common in the late 60's/early 70's. Some may have morphed into coupes, but there are probably a good number parked in sheds like a lot of old rods. Check old Australian rod mags, just for interest, not necessarilly build ideas.
Ha! Thanks MB. Thought it looked bit like a 90degree V-twin, but with Some kind of gargoyles affair going on at the top - more cylinders below, then? This's also reminded me I have a 28/29 Sport Coupe shell in bits stashed around here - not sure if that'll ever get to the front of the queue, though.
That'll be the remnants of a B17 engine dug out of the fields surrounding Thorpe Abbots airfield. Picture is taken from the control tower at the 100th bomb group museum.
Thats Phil's car, ask Sean about it bern if you want more info. Phil's a nice block and good friends with a mate of mine...
I'll vouche for this coupe. I went for my first ride in the coupe in over 20 years, (its been a long rebuild) and by god this thing hauls ass. It has run a best of 12.58 over the qrtr, with 6" of light on launching. Sticks like shit to blanket too. Its got a lot more grunt left in it, and should be dynamite when fully sorted. Its changed my mind as to what a Hot Rod should do, but I'll still keep the stovebolt mill in mine 29 5 window.
Thanks for posting the photo, saves me finding the old copy of Rod & Custom that featured the car on the cover. That is THE Sport Coupe that all others are compaired to, hope it is still running the Crager.
Always wanted to build a cabriolet out of one of these, seems like you could build a rigid side frame into the top in lieu of the upper door frames and then use some kind of folding cover on the door that would pop up when the window is lifted. You could probably use panels above trunk lid from Brookville to finsih that area.
Rob was telling me last week that Phil has just done a hole lot more to the top end since the 12.58! He was hoping to let loose at Heatchote but I think the rain may have put a stop to it...
Anyone have any more pictures of this coupe? I'm very interested to see its detail from more, well, normal angles! Happy new year! -Gregory-
Sorry I've taken a while to reply to this but here's a post from a previous monthly banger meet with a few more pictures of my A.
