    A 42 Ford is 221 inches, a 46 will be 239. 39-48 Mercs were all 239.

As far as what to look for it aint no different than a Chebby. Check the oil for coolant and look for bubbles in the radiator.

If it makes funny noises or leaves lots of smoke and odors then you dont want it.
Grayish-White smoke is a sure sign of a blown head gasket or crack.

Lots of blue means it is an oil burner.

thanks is there any way to tell if the valve seats are cracked and will it bolt right in

  4. Don't know if it will bolt right in.
Valve seat cracked will sound about the same as a bad valve in any motor. Probably wouldn't hurt ot throw a vacuum gauge on it. Low vacuum is also a sign of bad valves and could indicate a bad seat.
Let it run long enough to get hot, it will show more problems after it heats up and everything gets a chance to expand and open up.

It is a bolt in as far as the block if both use the same water pumps. All 24 stud pumps interchange.
You may have to swap around things like fan and pulleys depending on what the other engine was used in.

The dizzy is also different but can be swapped with the other or an electronic.
