Help......Need a giant picture of Bonneville

Hey gang,

I'm working on a Bonneville display for the Bellytank for the Grand national roadster show, and I want to hang a giant picture of the Bonneville salt flats behind it. Probably around 8-10 ft. high by 14-20 feet wide.

Does anybody have a high resolution photo ?

Does anybody own a printing shop?

Any help would be appreciated.

To print that big, I was told by a local shop that the picture needs to be 30-40 megs, or between 40-100 dpi at actual size.

 

Why not paint one on canvas? Pretty simple: Clear blue sky, low horizon, low peaked mountains on said horizon. -stick

 

I'll have to dig and it may be a day or two but I probably got a high res of B-Ville that's print quality.

Cool idea.

A digital image of 30-40 MB will have to come from a VERY high end camera, most are less than 10MB.

Painting seems like a good alternative.

Are you offering to paint this up? If you can that would be great.......

 

As for the dpi constraints.....I don't believe you need that kind of quality for 2 reasons

* it is being used as a 'background', which, when you look at a regular photo is never in focus (nor should it be) as you always look at the 'foreground' (eg a bellytanker, with a 'hazy' resembelance of the landscape)

* because its 'background', and naturally has a very 'misty' color combination (light blues, light grey's, light yellows/tan) you can get away with a very 'vague' image (ie less dpi dependant)

I would have some 'quality' photo's at home if you need them, although not to the requested level of dpi.

After my accident and my missed trip to B-ville, Thirtyfivepickup sent me a disk of great photos. There are a few pictures of just the flats (less cars) that I am seriously considering making into wallpaper for a room of my house so I'm sure he could hook you up with a good pic.

I have access to a really wide printer, I'll ask the bossman what it'd cost. It would have to be 2 or 3 separate strips wide for the 10 ft dimension, length is ok as it comes off a roll. could probably use Buick59's files to do it, but it may get spendy for that much vinyl/paper. pm me if it fits what you need

 

Stupid thought, but what about a big white canvas or screen and a slide show going on the back? No doubt that there is no shortage of pics to choose from. Why not show all.

A couple of years ago this display was at the Detroit Autorama. One of my all time favorites. Had a background and floor covering similar to what your thinking perhaps.

For such large background displays you don't always need soo much quality in your pics. The bigger the original photo, the better of course, but unless you want to be able to count every grain of salt, you could get away with a slightly smaller image.
3 weeks ago I printed a by 14' by 36' shopdisplay for another printshop of ours from an image I found on Google. As long as you don't look at it from any closer than 10 feet orso it looks pretty nice.

Buick59's pic looks pretty good for such a purpose I guess. It could use some straightening of the horizon, but if he has a larger version of this pic it would look pretty good in large-format I guess.

So, I agree, the pic does not need to be as high rez as the print shop said, I'm sure it would look just fine with half the resolution.

If I had the time and space to paint one, I would, but I don't, so it ain't gonna happen.

I'm not doing this for any profiteering, so I can't pay money for pics. I'm doing this in support of the hot rodding hobby.

 

Another thought would be to contact a billboard company that has the printers that print billboard size. Probably costly, but it would be one piece.

He was using a large format camera on the salt, which would provide an excellent source negative. Maybe since you're in his book (Salt Dreams) he'd be favorable to providing a shot...

I think Bobby was thinking someone here on the HAMB would give up a cool picture for the display....Jimmy Katz would probably give us one but timing is crucial at this point. We still got alot of work to do to get ready.....Lucky

I cranked this out in photoshop pretty fast anyone could probably do it in paint just as easy.
