Guys ive ask this question before on yr, what do you think hot rodding will bein the next 50 years, or even 20 years?
After all of the 50's cars and 60's cars have done and rotted in the dirt, were left with what we are calling new vehicles.
With all of the carboard box styling that is going on nowadays, it looks to me like it will realy suck.

Imagine a hot rodded top chopped and sectioned ford windstar (just an example) cruising in at some car show!

    Whats your oppinion?

Ipods will allow ECU reprogramming via downloads and file sharing. . . .we're almost there now.

More seriously, I think we're already seeing it. . .1970s cars which were considered fugly and lame (even in their day), have passed their emissions testing windows, and are increasing in price as they fall into the category of rebuild candidates. . .and as they grow ever more "rare" thanks to the crappy steel of the day.

There will still be traditional cars in use, probably ethanol fueled. I think most people will have to be satisfied with a reproduction car due to limited supply. I've seen in a mag that someone rebuilt a 70's firebird with all steel parts, had to custom build replacements for the plastic crap. The aftermarket will get interesting as time goes by. You can now buy a new <<<<OT!!>>> 69 camaro body. I think we will accept repro traditional cars as the supply of originals dries up.

Unless outright forbidden people will still build and drive hot rods. Even if outlawed for street use they will build for racing/show use. Its a creative thing... as long as there are cars there will be hotrods.

Fifty years from now, the collectible cars will still be collectible (and therein lies the answer---collectible means museums)...shitboxes will crushed regularly and will become next year's shitboxes...after all, it is the era of the recycle-able auto.

Hot rods, kustoms, fifties and sixties cars will still be around...but NOT in Cali because of the strict laws...major cities will find ways of not allowing licensing of "ancient" (now antique) cars...precluding the driving of such in the cities...if you want a hot rod...you'll need to live outside a city...in the rural area in order for it to pass major emissions tests...

Rod runs will now include 1990's, 2000's and 2010 "special interest" cars...cuz they'll still be able to drive to those places...cuz they'll be licensed and emissioned...

Hot rods and kustoms will still be allowed...trailered in and put on static display...no cruising allowed cuz the emission cops will be there, watching, and giving "voluntary" e-tests to participants...of course, if you a member of that state's populuation, you should be very careful as they'll use that against you in licensing at the DMV.

Fifty years from now...SEMA will be the only one to get your hot rod licensed...and you must belong to it at a very pricey entry fee.

That's the good news...ready for the bad...???

  8. we are allready there, I've used my Ipod as an external harddrive to store and transfer ECU hex between home and work (yes, I'm a closet "tuner" as you so put it,,, what can I say, even though my heart is in rods, it pays the bills and I'm working on fast cars)

The new stuff will be turbo charged Jet packs, they will be for sale any day now. Old school will be the 2007 Lexus with a coffee can and neon lites, wide whites, and Red wheels. The antiques will be 1984 Cutlass with Hoops and Bands The stone age will be a 54 Cheby. Anything built before WWII will be put into a museum next to the Neanderthal man and taken out and ran every 100 years at the Rose Parade. Your Car will have been crushed because your great grand kids had to give up all the iron and steel because the world ran out of it, and it was needed to make medical devices.

Perhaps you should phrase your question differently then...more so that we can understand it.

To answer the question just look at history 50 years ago, 1957. The ANTIQUE car hobbiests Pre 1916 vehicles and the CLASSIC CAR CLUB of AMERICA guys with defined rules & limits were setting the groundwork for the hobby. They are still going strong and only allow the same cars today. The Pre 1948 NSRA rule is a good one for Street Rods, personally I think pre 1965 built vehicles are Traditional Hot Rods. Keeping vehicles in those cut off years will keep the hobby as we know it. The ricers and post 2007 vehicles can form their own clubs, I'll working on the stuff I've liked all along.

Interesting -- while it seemed possible, I didn't know it was already going on. The last car I "chipped" was back in `95 (a VW), and it was certainly a "physical" chip swap --- no Ipod for sure.

And for the record, I didn't call you a closet tuner. . .:)

It won't be as bad as you guys think, but hot rodding in 50 years will be different! Repro bodies will be the norm for building new traditional cars because we're gonna run out of vintage tin. They'll be more EFI powered rods because of the emissions issue. The repo industry will also be building 'bones, buggy springs, straight axles, etcfor those who want 'em.

Buy in cars for the younger guys with slack money will likely be the new Mustangs, Chargers and such of today. They'll have the electronics and mechanical
background to soup the shit out of these cars and I'd expect to see some Kustoms, possibly of the '50s-'60s style. Probably the most sought after car for the collector will be the 5.0 Fox Mustangs.since they're rapidly becoming the '57 Chevy of tomorrow.

    Beyond that, who knows..

In 50 years? Not sure if I'll have a 24 volt motor, or go whole hog with a 48 volt power house!! Either way, you won't hear me coming. Maybe I'll record screeching tires and reving motors and sell that to the hot rodders. Who's going to afford the gas, we're whining now. Best enjoy yourself while you can. Well Ma, remember that old 2007 Chevy we had, best ol bucket we ever leased. Yep, back when there was cheap gas, hell, back when there was gas. Har har Braap! Hey theres some gas fer ya Ma. Bottle it, will go for a drive. Rob

500 MPH in the Green Monster? press C 06 and hang on.

Porn will be VR as well....hmmmm....maybe Hot Rodding WILL die!!! LoL

  25. No no,, I keep my "tooner-istic" nature to myself around here, but yeah, the shop I work at is primarily audi/vw specific, and all the ecu reprograming is done by "flash" some of the older cars that use eprom chips still require changing the chip but for the most part everything '97 up can be done with a laptop in the passengers seat. The technology is really awesome acctually, I'm constantly amazed by the performance capabilities of new cars, and the advancements made by the aftermarket supporting them, but a very large part of me does not find the sense of pride or individuality by owning and modifying them, so on my weekends I patch rust, adjust carburetors, and b.s. with you guys. All the stuff my coworkers just don't get.

In the future, I expect to see a lot more open wheeled rods being built out of later tin, cut down late 30's and 40's bodies, pickup truck cab based rods up to '54 or so, lots of newer rear body sections grafted onto early cowls. We're seeing that revolution start already, as supply and demand of Model A coupes and other common hotrod bodies rises.

We'll see more totally reproduced old cars, like the AD trucks, '57 Chevy converts, and '69 Camaro bodies that we already have today, in addition to the early roadster bodies that are made in fiberglass and recently steel.

64-74 era musclecars will climb in value as more people want them, and 77-92 Camaros and Firebirds (esp. the T/A), 5.0 Mustangs, and the up-to-87 Montes, Cutlass', Regals and Grand Prix's will achieve musclecar status to match what the earlier ones have today.

I'd expect more retro-styled cars from the Big 3 like the Mustang, Challenger, 300C and Camaro to be produced, along with morphodites like the PT and HHR. The Donk and SUV crowd will continue to make rim diameters larger and tire height smaller until they touch in the middle.

Beyond that, I think we might come up with a new fuel source that's not gasoline, and hot rodders will be forced to choose between brewing their own alcohol fuel or swapping engines for a more modern powerplant that runs on whatever the fuel of the day will be. Should be fun to watch. Anyone want to place bets?

How are we going to put wide whitewalls on a landspeeder..Oh I'm such a Star wars dork...

I dont think the old stuff is going to go away, well probably more fiberglass. Hell, I would love to have a carbon fiber merc. Were just going to have to adapt. As far as the tuners, were all car guys.

Hydrogen baby, our internal combustion is going to have to go.

It's coming faster than we think, we just don't want to admit it.
