this is just a post so no one else does the same thing i guess we've had our gang of us that run around together here and we have had a somewhat fake kinda car club going since getting into really learning about the history of this stuff ive become pretty good friends with Bill Farren who raced at the dry lakes before and shortly after WWII Bill was in the Flyers car club and later the pasadena roadster club, which the flyers became in '46 we decided that we would revive the Flyers and use the name for our cars we had someone generously let us barrow an original flyers plaque and we're having a mold made right now to reproduce them recently we had marcy print some shirts for us also this isn't a real club with dues or anything just a group of friends interested in the same type of cars we're not being too strict to cars from before WWII like the club orignally had...but more or less based on cars before 55 in model and style anyways heres the guys in the "club" Bill Farren is our honorary member and our go-to guy on what really was he sent me the pictures that are black and white...from the original club, his car is the McCormick Reaper #214 me-ohS&C (jer) ---29 roadster with a 39 flathead, 52 chevy with the inline 6 retro54 (andy) ---1954 chevy unrestored original cyclonekevin (kevin) ---27 roadster with a 4 banger, 32 roadster with a flathead V8 suhrsc (zach) ---28 roadster with cyclone B motor, 28 roadster with a flathead V8 Roger Brandt ---31 roadster miller schofield A motor, 39 convertible hopped up V8 so anyways heres the pics Zach
OK being a farm boy I have to know, is there a story behind the name on the McCormick Reaper? Great pics and very cool that your reviving the old club, especially with original members blessings. GV
*edited* Thanks Zach for posting the picts! Like he said, the club is more of an affiliation of like minded individuals... and while I may look out of place with only a '54 chevy... ... plans are in the works for a roadster in the near future... but like zach says, my chevy is so original, it's just like it was in '54... and I figure I'm the guy who borrowed his parents sedan, or who's folks got him the '54 chevy as his first car and so placed sandbags or cinderblock in the trunk on friday nights so he could ride low and cruise with his buddies with the cooler, faster cars, until he could get his own... but like I tell zach, he only has room for one girl in his car, I can fit 3 or more ladies in mine!
This is probably more than you need to know, but that Riley pic gave me a semi... no... wait... it's a full. Cool stuff. Is that yours, or someone in the clubs? Jay
Thats great to hear Zach. The most important thing is to have fun with old cars and friends. Any plans for a Florida Chapter ?
Sorry, as of right now the shirts are a members only thing. Maybe SUPPORT THE FLYERS shirts in the future? Thanks again for the great welcome. Me-oh
You guys know how to have fun. Cool pics. Retro54: You need to get a roadster off course, running around with those other hoddlums. You can't just think of thre/foursome's in the moredoor.....you need to race with wind in the hair also. Business before ple***ure ......and all that ****. I'll buy the beer when you all come to see the Norwegian countryside. Paul
thanks everyone for the great welcoming of our "club" i was reluctant to post this as i dont really care for the whole car club thing that i see sometimes.... heres the president...heres the rules....pay your dues our club is just a group of friends more or less that want to revive the past....and brining this club back to life helps promote the history but also allows us to show our comRODery let me see if i can answer all these questions now the McCormick reaper name came from Bill running a Harry Miller overhead cam head on his car. it was a shaft driven cam which opened the intake valves in the head...the car had a cam in the stock location opening 16 exhaust valves exiting through all 6 of the stock ports....the shaft driven cam was very noisy and therefore people said his car sounded like a reaper....so the "McCormick Reaper" kinda stuck i guess the humpback 37/38? was a friend of Bill's car...with his wife this picture was in 1942 and they towed bill to the lakes...the one tag i posted was from this meet where he did 100mph he said that people lowered their cars like this quite often but i never asked exactly how they did it. the riley head was not Bill's but he took the picture...he couldnt remember who owned it...but i ***ume someone in the club because theres a picture of his miller head on what looks like the same crate ok i think i got everything covered? thanks everyone Zach
very well could be....but i kinda think it's Z'd its funny talking to bill about this stuff i asked if he had any hot rods after 46 or so he said....."no nothing good i only had a 40 convertible with a merc motor and a cut down carson top...which i got rid of when the new mercury's came out".....yea...nothing good!!!
