Hello All I caught this at the local junkyard literally as he was loading it into the crusher and saved it from a very tragic demise. I seen one of these at the Sprigfield MO swap meet befor the HAMB drags in Aug and was told it was a Oxygen tank out of a 40-50s era Bomber..i dont know if its true or not but regardless its a cool Alum tank that will serve a purpose. (i know the metal ring is standing on doesnt belong) Could anyone give me a little more info on these things or correct what i was told.? PS: sorry bout the quality of pics
Yeah, that's what it is I think. I've seen some of those in a local s**** yard. I was told some of them came out of B-36 bombers. Some of them are smaller or different shapes (some sort of a rounded wedge shape). Sometimes they're painted an ugly olive drab color (zinc chromate primer?). They all have that same basic construction with straps wrapped around them. What are you going to use it for, a fuel tank?
Is that what that thing is?! I've been admiring and trying to figure out how to use a VERY similar tank for my own diabolical purposes. Everytime I breeze through this local antique store, I can't justify spending all the money on what the have labeled "metal buoy". Now that I know it came out of a bomber though, I'm gonna have to bite. Thanks a lot.
That looks simular to a Liquid Oxy Tank. If so it would be a LOW pressure vessel. I would NOT use it for any pressure stroage. (From a Retired USAF Crew Chief)
Take a real good look at the fuel tank that is in the Williams Bros hemi powered 29 roadster in #34 of The Rodders Journal. It looks very similar and it is military surplus.
Joe dirt needs gl***es. RV tanks are made from polyethylene and are usually black in color. They are also rectangular or square depending on the spacial allowance. The inlets and outlets are usually 3" on a RV tank. Kermit
by the way, i HATE zinc chromide, zinc chromate, and zinc oxide! be careful if you sand that **** off, it's very cancerous!
I have one I got at a local swap meet, looks identical to the one you have. Mine was converted for use as an air tank for filling tires, that kind of stuff. It has the words "breathing oxygen" stenciled on the top. Cool tanks, was thinkin of usin it on a car, but kinda small. I think mine is steel, I'll check tommorrow.
i used one in my 34 ford truck. I have another one too. They are both stainless. Blast it clean, it will look great. Cool gas tank, small, but cool. ROB
There stainless steel. I turned mine into a gas tank. The local metal yard had a tank that looks just like these but on 'roids. It was about 3 x 5'.
Well Im glad i saved it, since it seems like it really is an Oxy tank out of a old bomber i would make a cool runabout gas tank but not really big enough for a tank on a vehicle your going to make any kind of long haul in so i dont know what i'll use it for yet but i'll find somthing im sure
Whatever it is I would like to have one. Anyone out there have one for sale??? P.M. me and we will talk. I have an idea on what it would be on my project. If I can get one I'll purge the info.
It would have been in any of the acft that used low press o2 in the 40/50s .when the services went to liquid o2 that had to be diff because of the high pressure. this tank should be good to 120 psi.
I had one with the original yellow paint and you could still see "oxygen" stenciled too. Sold it for about $150 last year. Did I give it away?
These things exist in numerous sizes...they used to be very common on filling station tow trucks as tire inflation tanks.
I was thinking of buying the one I know of to convert it into something like that. It's way too small for a gas tank, but too caool with far too much history to just p*** up. At the cary least it will be one more nifty decoration for the garagae/man space... when I get a garage/man space.
My father has one that once was the air tank for a small compressor. I've seen them advertised in old 1950s PM magazines by surplus dealers.
My uncle worked on bombers in ww II and ended up bringing home one of these. I found it as a kid in about 1965 at the family farm and laid claim on it .It now is my portable air tank and one of my favorite garage pieces.....NICE FIND!
