So it's not a hot rod but look close. He used the lettering from a pickup tailgate to fill the dash and sunk Harley gages into it. There's no reason this couldn't be done with a Ford or Chevrolet tailgate. Take a look, I think it's neat.

OhBoy, you must have been up all night thinking of that one.

    It's definately neat though.

oh great, he's got a fogged up fuel gauge, a worthless air temp gauge and a speedo that works 1/2 the time ;)

  8. I put a VW dash in my Model A, but it didn't look like that !!! I kinda like it.

  9. Anyone notice the typo? They spelled D-U-M-B wrong.

Reminds me of the people who drive a Camaro (or whatever) and have CAMARO in big letters across the top of the windshield...

I can imagine a model A using the script gate from a T pickup to form a dash board. I would recommend having a speedometer though. I still think it's a neat and original idea even if all of the "cooler than though" types are attempting to boost their egos by putting down anything different.

Would you want him using (wasting) a nice set of Sun's or SW's on it? The concept of embossing a dash is interesting, but generally speaking, if it's on a tailgate, leave it on a tailgate.

I think its a cool idea I've never seen before.

There was some mullet back in the day in my town that had some trans am or something, when those across the windshield decals were all the rage (like Vanilla Ice era) Anywho, while lookin real cool with his Firechicken or whatever, someone pointed out that the sticker read "Pontica"

    naaaah

On a more serious note, its interesting, but not for me

Does anyone else get a blue box with a question mark in it where the picture should be? Why is this happening to me? (The responses to that question should be good). Thanks Brian

  19. OK my ego needs a boost. ;)

I like the concept well enough, although I'd like to say I would have used something different. That said I wasn't there at the time and didn't have a V-Dubb tail gate at my disposal.

Never the less mabe the V-8 tailgate from a Ford might be a cool idea for a Ford dash. Just a thought. Sometimes what is considered a dumb idea can spur a lot of good ideas.

  21. I'm not cooler, smarter, richer or better looking than anyone, and this is only my opinion. I think it's dumb. Visually unappealing, distracting, and not very functional (how about a tach, at least?).

Having said that, lots of people have opinions and very few have ideas, so let me try to be more constructive... you could accomplish the same sort of effect and work with the contours of the dash better if you started with a flat panel and had the lettering cut out of high density .125" styrene (a good sign company can cut out the lettering). Once the lettering is adhered to the dash panel you can contour the edges with body filler, then sand and paint. Similar effect that could be more appealing (or... more streetrodderiffic, depending on your perspective).

I kinda like how Chevy did it in 1955, the Belair has an aluminum trim panel across the dash, with a billion little bowties embossed on it. Subtle, but they did get the advertising point across.

Embossing the dash is an interesting idea... maybe outlining the dash and raising the area surrounding the gauges. It depends on the concept AND the execution. Someone might be able to gleen a couple ideas from THIS, too. (well, I couldn't, but I couldn't look at it very long before becoming ill)

In the early 80's I saw a pair of 59 Bonneville tail ligt bezels made into a dash. The driver's side had a bar type speedo with a round gauge at each end. The passenger side was the opening for the glove box.

I wish I had a picture of it!

I think using a Ford logo tailgate for the rear of a rpu or modified might be neat.

  29. Cool idea - using a body panel as a dash.

maybe a section of quarterpanel or door skin could be made to work.

But when I clicked on Mr T body's link...
the only ideas I got centered around a wrecking ball.

So...what...the owner couldn't remember it was a VW...had to be reminded all the time by putting that in front of him...

"Now where'd I park that car...what kind was it again?"
