36-42 Ford PickUp Cabs THE SAME ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mai Ki-Ki, Aug 31, 2003.

  1. Just researching my next project...Looking at using a 38 Ford Cab with a custom bonnet grille based around a 40 FORD Bonnet/grille..

Are the Cabs from the 38 the same as any other years?
Anyone Know a good site for Dimensions of these..?
I need to draw the Thing up in AutoCAD....

    Thankx

  2. seems like its like this- 38 has more ribs at beltline rib on body -like three versus one- also the 40 thru 47 is real similar with small differences where frt fenders bolt on. we have a 47 that a 40 frt wnd will fit nicely - just have to drill mount holes at cowl side for fenders there-Kenny

  3. thanks choprods....

The 38 has the flow i want for the top..gonna lean back the front posts...and get a 40 bonnet whickh i'll cut and shut a bit to fit with extended sides that run down the front of the cowl...Starting to collect bits now..

Heres a concept pic i made up in photoshop...Based on a REAlly LOW 38/40 posted on here ages ago..but made more legal..added bed..new bonnet grille relationship etc..

  5. thanks manyolcars!

  6. CHOPRODS...MY CURRENT WORRY IS HOW TO MATCH THE 3 RIBS (38/39 - from what i've been told here) to a 40'ish Bonnet and custom sides...Guess might have to find 38 bonnet and remove side ribs to add to my custom hood..maybe the 38 hood can be modified to give the beak front of the 40? I'LL be looking into it..Need to see one in person now.

The 38's side ribs on the hood we'rnt a 'bolt on' part were they?

    Thnaks for your help!

I have put a 40 front on a 38 cab, the 38 cab is narrower, you will have to pinch the hood at the rear. The 3 ribs on the door belt line diminish to one on the A post and is near as dammit to the one on the side of the 40 hood (standard & pick up) You will also have to fab hinges as the 38 & 40 are different. The V at the rear of the hood where it meets the cowl is the same. I agree that the 38 39 cab is nicer, if you were looking for a bolt on swap I think the 37 passenger car would be a direct bolt on.
Also on the hood the 38 39 has seperate sides were as on the 40 the sides are part of the top, the swage line on the 38 is on the hood top not the sides.

  8. gasser! Thanks that exactly what i needed to know..any pics? Or is yours the one I'm thinking of that got posted a while back?

Planning to have a non hinged hood sitting on a perimeter frame. Attached with Duez Fastners ( or similar).

The 40' Hood is a one piece item or two pieces seperated down the middle. Hoping to run the art deco styled central Trim piece..

    Thanks!

  12. the 36/7 seems to have a flatter roofline or is that just the way everyone chops them? The 38/9's seems to have a higher back than front..which suits my plan better..!

    Thanks for the pic.

The 35-36 are the same, the 37 is different. The 39-40 are the same I believe. There is a year break on the 39-40 but not sure when it is the 39 has an ugly grill.

Damn I wish you were closer! I dont want to start on my 43 until after I get rid of that friggin ugly nose.
Ive also been told the 38-9 car will work. One guy sent me a pic of his complete 38 tilt car nose on a 42.
Just cant find them around these parts.

manyolcars, you need to change you name to manyoltrucks... Nice selection you got there....

SO the 40 truck front fits the 42-46 with a minor amount of work.. Uhm,,, good to know

HamtownAl has grafted a 36 nose to a 40 cab - looks pretty nice. PM him for details and/or go to his website, www.36fords.com.

Anyone seen a 40's cab with a 38 hood? I have everything for a 38 except the hood, but I have 40's cab. Just curious how bad or good it would look do to the different belt lines. Seems like it would work.
