Whats the difference between Deluxe cabs and Standard cabs? I'm ordering a replacement windshield seal and I need to know? Is it just a trim/chrome package? Thanx
The 64-66 custom cabs had the stainless strip within the windshield gasket. These windshields are not easy to install, especially with the custom trim piece. I've helped a friend install numerous windshields in '60's era Mercedes, which had the same stainless trim inserts & every one was a battle. When it came time to do the windshield in my '66 C-10, I farmed it out to the pros. It didn't surprise me that they had a mother of a time with it & tried to talk me out of using the trim piece. I ended up (luckily) finding an NOS gasket, because they couldn't deal with the foreign made repop. They finally did it, but everyone was sweatin' bee-bees until it was done (more them than me). Anyway, "chevytalk.org" is the website to go to for your year truck. I could not have gotten through my restoration had it not been for them. There's alot of threads there on the whole windshield thing. Like any other car thing, you'll get horrors stories & people that have no problems. My experience was not very good with the '66, but I had no problem doing the standard cab windshield of my '47 Chevy truck. If you don't have the custom trim piece, get the plain gasket. The custom stainless trim pieces for the windshield are not reproduced, by the way.
Thanks for all the info, my truck doesn't have the trim around the windshield. Got the seal ordered...
One other thing I read on the chevytalk forum for 60-66 pickups, was that the original windsheilds were thicker than some of the aftermarket ones And there was also a bigger groove in the windsheild rubber for the thicker windshield, An old windsheild with a narrow rubber is going to be a tight fit, And a newer thinner windsheild with and older type wider rubber is going to be a loose fit and may leak Like arkracing said check out chevytalk.com , search the windshield install posts. Good luck, Dan
fleetside 66 has ya covered. The standard vs. deluxe was the trim. The 'flags' behind the door on each side of the truck, the trim line down the side. Aluminum grill vs. painted grill, chrome bumpers vs. painted. Also, I think back then the rear bumper was optional becuase guys who used their trucks would put some kinda aftermarket work bumper on or build their own to taste. chevy truck resource pages - forums along the lines of the HAMB, but they are chevy trucks crazy. http://woogeroo.home.mindspring.com/autolinks/trucks.html#ctrp http://www.stovebolt.com <- all chevy/gmc trucks built before 1973. They have separate forums for engine, body, interior, there is a big 'swap meet' section of the forums for parts. they have the 'hi-po shop' for inline sixe hop up or later model engine swaps. Great folks. They are more traditional or engine swap but keep it looking more stock for the most part. Lots of great tech advice. Several retired chevy mechanics hang out over there. http://www.chevytalk.com - forums - 60-66 chevy trucks and vans forum - all kinds of people, extreme choppin' and dropping or bone stock, they all wander in. Good stuff to search through. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com - this site covers 1947 to newer(current style) tchevy/gmc trucks. There is a 60-66 message board for questions and answers and a 60-66 parts board for parts for sale. All kinds of peopel over there also, bone stock to lay frame to bigger engine and more power types. Those are the big 3 of old chevy truck websites I think. There is another one, http://www.fullsizechevy.com - which deals more with 1989 to newer trucks, but it does have a 'classics' section for anything built before 1988. http://www.60-66chevytrucks.info/ - The '60 - '66 Chevy Trucks Website - great information! <- this site has a bunch of articles, diagrams on 'stuff', pictures of 60-66 trucks.
