Coker tubes / Dirt Tracks / stem size problem

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by **MCQUEEN**, Jan 8, 2007.

  1. Went to get the rear Coker/Firestone 8.90-16's mounted on American Salt Flats. Didn't notice the tubes had the large 5/8 size stem.....wheels have 3/8 size stem hole and no way is there enough room to drill them out.

Coker says use them and let the majority of the stem just stand up inside the tire. That's not right. The stem hole will be cutting into the stem, not to mention the inside of the tube where the stem is made onto it will be constantly flexed backwards on itself towards the wheel.

He gave me the 'ol "well these are for display purposes only anyway".

Does anyone know where to get a 9.00-16 tube with the regular p***enger car 3/8 size stem ?

Do you really need tubes with the new wheels.
Haven't done it with the dirt trackers, but the Firestone (deluxe champion)bias on new rims,I never put in tubes.

  4. Well, they don't say tubeless on the tire, he says they need tubes.....secondly, we tried it without tubes, when they come all wrapped up the beads are ****ed together and there was no way to get them to blow up on an 8" wheel. He tried stretching them on a tire repair machine, they just went back together, we tried everything, except the old ether trick....he wud'n down with that. I drove almost 2 hrs. to a pro race tire shop to get them mounted, balanced and shaved to true them up.

Needless to say I only got the fronts done, but I can wholeheartedly recommend getting them shaved if you have anyone around that does it....talk about some crooked *** lumpy tires, I can't imagine what they would have driven like before being shaved.

Most tire shops have an inflation devise that kinda looks like a 30IB freon can. It has like a 3/4" valve that dumps the compressed air all at once for inflateing the tough ones. On a side note I used the old ether trick yesterday, I know its dangerous but I love to do it!

MCQUEEN, I think a wide tire motorcycle tube would work, like a 16"x 200mm, they make center & side stem the 16"x200mm I have here in the shop is a center stem but the stem is 5/16.

Our warehouse still shows a KR16 radial p***enger tube with a small TR13 stem as well as a 750R16 LT with the TR13 stem. Slightly undesized but will fit OK. I would prefer that over too large. The 900-16's all come with the big stem (TR150).

I just had my new Hurst mounted on 8 inch wheels. They had to put a tube in the tire and let it sit in front of a salamander for a while to stretch them out to where they could get them to seat. They didn't want to ether them because it would burn the whitewall off. After that they still had to use the blow gun on them.

I have Cokers on the spacetruck without tubes. Maybe the dirt track tires are different though......?

You don't need tubes.I have these tires mounted on salt flats as well I have the fronts mounted up as well on salt flats with out tubes. They have been on the car for over a year now without any issues at all.

What does that have to do with valve stems?
