So I came into this hobby always having a love for cars and not really knowing what Traditional Rodding was about. Just look at one of my first posts and you will find I was a dumb ass. Hell I am prolly still one. However I am trying to change that. I took some advice given to me which was get ahold of Rodders Journal and everything else regarding Traditional Rodding and read the hell out of it. Also to sit back and listen to people on here and not say shit just listen. I did that and I am making progress and I have learned that I don't know shit and to take advice whenever it comes at you. Anyways I got ahold of a bunch of parts I do not need for my A and all they do is take up space. My girlfriend bought me a frame off of here and I was left with the old one that is not really all that good for much but having fun with it. So I have started taking all the spare parts and throwing them together. It will be a royal shitbox that does no more than haul firewood and coolers to my party spot on the land.I figure at least the parts will still be doing something instead of sitting and rusting to nothing. So what do you guys do with all the spare or left overs? Selling them does not count....
This is where my last parts-stash went, plus I scavenged friend's parts stash's too. The grille shell came off Carkiller's shop wall, headlights from my dad's 47 Diamond T cast-offs....engine was outta a buddy's 41 ford pickup "steetrod" and the tranny was left over from an S-10 winter beater...rest was stuff that didn't sell at the local swap meets.
This is what we built with a buncha leftover parts. I had about $400 into the whole thing.....Shiny http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27270&highlight=bindup
Spare parts? What spare parts? They are not spare, they are the seeds from which the next 10 projects grow! I'm working on a new Model A project even now. So far I have the speedometer!
Around here, eventually all spare parts cease being spare at some point in the future. The key is to get rid of the bottom 80% of your leftovers, skim the cream as they say. Does 2 things, first is the obvious improvement in your future projects when the spares are recycled. And we've all got friends who can use the cast offs, so to them I'm like santa. Personally get alot of enjoyment out of helping their projects move forward, and those guys bend over backwards to help me find whatever elusive junk I currently need. It's like a little parts ecosystem
New guy here... In the 60's when I first started, I belonged to a car club. Back then we shared left over or unused parts. We'd give away a part knowing full well somewhere down the line a part of equal value would come our way. I still follow this tradition today.
i got 3 sheds full of spare parts. you never know when you might need something. yes, i'm a packrat, collector of shit
I've got friends like you! Great guys! They'll even give a part back if you need it. They don't know it, but are storing several truckloads of my crap that I suspect I will need in 10 years, but don't want to keep at my house
If the spare parts are 1932 Ford pieces ... I keep them ... They are making more dollar bills but Henry quit making Deuce parts a LONG time ago ... Sometimes when someone has a 32 part I need ... I can trade a 32 part for his ... because he will not sell his either ... but will trade. 32 guys are clanish ... Other parts ... I take to Charlotte AutoFair swap meet ... had a swap meet spot there for 30 years ... starting back when it was at the Fairgrounds ... NOW ... it is more of a social event ... lots of HAMBer there ... hang out ... talk and socialize ...
I bought a basketcase.....and added all the rusty scrap I had laying in piles around my shop....now I ride the shit outta it. Do the same with four wheels.
