brake linings

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 39 lives, Jan 5, 2007.

  1. I'm in the midst of rebuilding the brakes on my '40 ch***is. The front linings are good enuff to reuse without re-lining. Both sides on the rear were gummy from all the brake fluid leaking out on them. So, I'm now faced with the task of re-lining the rear cores. My question is; can this be done w/ a regular rivet gun, or the " big-daddy" rivet gun? Will I have to get the rivet tool listed in the Speedway Catalog?
So far, everthing else has checked out. All wheel cylinders rebuit, drums had enuff meat for slight turn, all's good except for the linings in the rear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You will have to use a rivet set designed for the rivets that are made for brake and clutch linings.
I bought one on ebay a while back.

Take them to a brake shop with the drums, they will rivet the new linings on and fit ( match the shoes ) to the drums. This shouldn't be an Xee exercise.

I got my linings as a kit with rivets, put a punch in my drill press and used it as an arbor press, tapped them with a small hammer to make sure they were tight. Works ok or you could let a brake shop do them if you need to re-arch the shoes. I had new drums so the shoes were a perfect fit. .....Bob

  5. I'm waiting for a set of linings from a fellow HAMBster, since I'm on a perty tight budget. So, I thought I could do it myself. I've called a couple of brake & clutch joints and for one axle, they said between $120-150. All of my drums are good and the linings are brand new, but haven't arrived yet. I'll still need to get rivets for this whole project. Thanks for all the input/ advice.

  6. My good friend also told me that the rivets were specific to the brakes. Something about the little cavities needing venting for g***es being pressurized, so the rivets have holes in them. I buy that.

  7. The rivet tool I spoke of earlier is actually from Cl***ic Auto Parts out of OKC, not Speedway. I'm tired, all the time, ha.

I believe that McMaster-Carr has the rivets that are used on brake and clutch linings.
There are different lengths and diameters.

  9. I found that in the same catalog, they offer the lining kit W/ the rivets. And , you can get the rivets seperately, for 2.95 for a pack of 80. The tool is the trick piece. For $40, it may just be the ticket I'm looking for.
Also, I did get the linings from fellow HAMBster. I accidentally sent him my P.O. Box. The package sat at the P.O. for who knows how long. My bad. I also found Antique Auto Parts, in Arlington, Tx. They said that they could cover one axle for $85, with the core exchange. That's $85 for 4 shoes, but you send in your shoes. I think that's fair, even though i would like to keep my old ones. Anyhoo, I might end up going to Arlington soon. I may drop in w/ my old cores, ha.
Thanks for all the input. - Al
