Model A 21" Front Wheels tube or tubeless

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SinastirSpeedShop, Jan 6, 2007.

  1. I just picked up some Model A 21" wire front wheels for $27.00 total. Where these tube or tubeless tires? Also what is a good place to pick up a set of tires. Nice white walls. Thanks

I believe (could be wrong) coker has a set for them. I have a set of those wheels too. I want to run a full set all the way around on my A.

21 inch Model A wheels were used on '28-'29 Model A Fords and they used tubes with the tires. Black wall or white wall tires made by a variety of manufacturers including Firestone, Goodyear, Denman, etc. They should be available from any good Model A parts supplier.

Should I be worried about throwing 500 horse at these wheels?

I got a resounding NO from everyone when I asked about using the 19" counterparts on my flathead powered AV8.

One thing to do on laced or wire wheels is to tape the spokes over on the inside of the rim with black fabric tape. keeps some friction and protects the tube from hitting the spokes.

I think I'd pay to watch that, if you have some 2" thick Lexan in front of the bleachers...

But I'll bet that your flatty isn't putting out 500 horses, right? ;)

  16. Will disk brakes work with these wheels?

Not after you've put 500 horsepower through them...

Discs will certainly stop the hub...whether the rim stops too will be the question. These 21" wheels haven't held up all that well even in stock use, and lots of braking torque or lots of going torque might just finish them...

I'm pretty sure that the Model A wires won't go onto later drums (at least correctly) without a support spacer. The later drums are too large a diameter to fit within the hub area of the Model A wheels, like the A drums do. If you just bolt the wheels directly to the drums, the wheel hub will not be in contact with the drum. I dunno about discs, it'd be an odd combo that the spacers won't work with most likely. The easiest way to use A wheels is to first mount them to the wall, and then wrap your air hose around them for a nice lookin' hose reel...
