Hello All, As this my first attempt at building a rod and I need some help. I have a 48 Ford truck axle and I need to know what parts I need to build a complete front. What parts interchange? I just want to know what to look for when I go out looking for parts. Here are a few pics.. Also... Are there any pin strippers near Nashville willing to teach a fledging artist some techniques. Thanks for your time, J
It would help us to be able to help you if we knew what your are going to be using this in. Do you want original equipment for it? Or are you looking to change it up some and put a new brake kit on it? Fill us in on the project so we can help you out.
This is all have so far.. 70 model buick 455 and transmission 2x3 tubing 10 bolt chevy rear end I am looking to build a 31 ford model a sedan or truck whatever i can find for a good price. Something similar to these two. thanks, J
here, I'll bump it for you,, have a little patience and give people a chance to answer. Just for the record, I don't think the mods like it too much when you bump a post twice within forty minutes of starting the thread.
Looks like ya need spindles, kingpins, brakes, nuts and bolts and stuff. As has already been said, '48-'52 Ford truck parts are the interchange source. There is some other stuff that fits, but keep it simple by keeping it in the family. Tim D.
that axle uses parallel leaf springs not the cross spring like on the front of model A's and the pics you posted you would be better off finding an axle that uses the cross spring but if you have to use that axle i have complete front brakes for it spindles, backing plates, drums and hubs pm me if you are interested
I thought that was the case "the parellel leaf spring". Does anyone have the set-up on their rod and if so.. any pointers or tips to help me out. I do have a 30's style axle also so I can go either way. Just whatever is easier and better on the budget.
If the "30s style " axle is a Ford, that would be the way to go. Plenty of parts, both used and repop, are available. If you want to use the axle in the pic, as a cross spring, the "ears" of the spring pads can be cut off and perches can be welded on just like a spring-over tube axle.
I'm not up to date on the few underslung projects on this site, you might be able to get away with that axle and quarter eliptical springs and useit in an underslung chassis set up. For ease of a fisrt time build, I would trade up to the early 30's axle you have and check into the earlier respones for the truck brakes. they might work for you. And the early axle will be less head ache for you.
So the spindles, backing plates, drums and hubs from a 48-52 ford will work with the 30's ford axle? yes the 30s axle is a ford.
Here's apic of our hot rod front end using an aftermarket MAS frt end, can be bought without brakse for about $350 to $450 bucks, includes tube axle, spring, hairpins and hardware...works well
I'll second that. I've used a new super bell axle, a copy of the original Ford axle, with a 4 inch drop. I then used 49 Lincil 12 inch backing plates from the rear and welded the E-Brake opening closed. On these baking plates I have used Buick aluminum drums and Wilson Welding? hubs. I don't have any pic's small enough to load here, sorry. There are many ways to make this set up work for you. Are you looking for drums or disks up front? There are lots of Hamb members that sell these parts, and run speed shops. Check the Vendor listings for some, they will, no doubt, be happy to help you out.
Thanks guys right now super bell is out of my budget I am looking for a set up like enginetuner posted about earlier. Or a place where I can buy seperate parts for a reasonable price. Thanks J
