I was thinking about getting a 55-57 Chevy rear end for a '31 Model A sedan my friend has...BUT it will be too narrow. I know they are the perfect width for a Coupe, but the sedan wheel archs stick out more. Is there another chevy rear end that is the perfect width...or does he use tri chevy and reverse the rims? any help appriciated! Dean http://www.DicEmagazine.com
if the 55 rear is to narrow i think the S10 will be also.a lot of S10 are overdrive so there rears are low geared. may are may not be what you want. you might take a look at the 78-82 or so GM intermediates about 57-58" with higher gears if the donor car didnt have od.
I am using a 58 Chevy...I think I may narrow mine by cutting down one side and using two short axles, therefore centering the center section...
look for 60-64 chevy car, they are wide enough and look much like a 9" ford. probably will have a good road gear as well. and if you want to use ford 5.5" wheel pattern, axle hub is wide enough to drill out.
I had a 55 chevg rear in my 31 coupe, it was to wide, and the s10 in there now is almost too narrow, I prefer the s10. Its got low gears, the highest you can get stock is 3:70s, most had 4:10. I know its not a sedan, but the info might help.
here is a link to alot of cars and the widths that the rear end are so you can decide which one will work best. http://50chevy.freeservers.com/Suspension_Widths.html#Suspension Dave
For what its worth... I have a 56 chevy rear in my 29 sedan, with no fenders. The dimension from axle flange to axle flange is roughly 54". It fits fine, although if anthing maybe slightly on the wide side. Not sure of the set back of my rims. I would shoot for an axle in the 52-54" range. I think anything larger would be too wide.
Forgot to mention..My inner fender panels have been replaced and are similar to those found on the coupes..no humps.
