    I go with the 429

    Cost - 283
    Traditionalism - 283
Wow factor - Bigblock every time
    Fun - 429
    Mileage - 283
    Swap kits - even

Practicality might lean toward the 283, but big blocks are fun & there's loads of stuff available for the 429 if you decide stock isn't good enough! I will own another big block car...

  4. Neither. If it's a 50's Ford, then to stay really cool and period correct, put a Caddy or an Olds in it. Way cool

Wow, this comparo isn't even apples & oranges...it's apples & cinder blocks! :D

A 283 would be a damn sight cheaper to build, but in a TRUCK with a FOUR SPEED, you'll just be making noise as you row it through the gears from stoplight to stoplight. The 429 backed by the C6 will deliver gobs of torque in a smooth manner to the rear wheels and will get that beast up and moving quick.

    It's a truck...build it like a truck!!!

The 429 into a F-1 (M-1) is an easy swap. Motor home headers fit perfect. Tons of torque=lots of fun............OLDBEET

I'm a FORD fanatic but the BB Ford gets terrible gas mileage for a driver. My nephew has a 460 w/DOVE heads in the race car tow truck and it tows like heck but we have to make to many gas stops on a long haul.Back in the day , the FE block (390/428) was the common swap but gas mileage ****s with them too.For a driver ,if I had to choose between your two ,I'd go with the 283 but my choice would be the 351W.

If your looking at cost I just add up what I spent on a 283 build. It came out to about $2000.00 for the motor. That's with me ***embling the engine. my .02 ;)

    429. Everybody just smiles when they ride in a big block powered truck. BIG smiles. Think of your friends and family, it's for them....haha

    Ford 429 - 7 to 10 mpg.

    Chevy 283 - 14 to 18 mpg.

Make your choice on how much you want to drive it. If the price of gas doesn't matter to you, go with the 429.

I say Big block (429) in your truck. Save the 283 for your open wheel coupe or sedan, you'll want to see that thing all dressed up with fifties stuff.
Besides who builds their "toy" for gas mileage??? That's why they build Toyotas!

  18. That's a real eye roller.

    Thanks,
