Can someone please post a pic of the 3rd member head on and of the rear cover head on?? I'm having some doubts.
If you are wondering is it an 8" or is it a 9", it's relatively easy to tell. For a 9" you can tell like this: When removing the 3rd member from the housing....On the bottom of the 3rd member under the pinion area there are a few nuts that you will have to remove with a wrench as you won't be able to get a socket on it. For an 8" those same nuts will be easily removed with a sock and ratchet. Of course when you have an 8 and a 9 side by side you can easily tell the difference as the 9 is physically larger.
If it's assembled, Tingler's method is the easiest/best as they look almost damn identical. If it's apart, measure the ring gear diameter... Pictures really won't do you MUCH good, they're are a butt load of different 3rd member housings and yokes available. I've had a few, and I shit you not never 2 of the same.
Yep, look at the axle hubs. 28 spline have an hourglass sorta deal cast into them, the 31 spine has 3 round holes in a line.
I have found that the ends of the axles is not always true.....spline counting is the only 100% way to be sure.
i can tell 9" from 8" by the back of the case, what im concerned is at a glance i was sure the rear in my 51 ford was swapped to a 9" already. however someone on here had posted a pic of a stock 51 ford rear, and from memory (the car is at my garage couple town over) that looked oddly familiar too. castings?? anything like that i can look for??
IN your first post you mentioned wanting a pic of the rear cover. There is no rear cover on either 8" or 9" axles. If you have one on your '51 it's not a 9". If it was swapped it might be an 7.5/8.8
i kno there isnt technically a rear cover on an 8" or 9", so ill say this a head on pic of the rear of the case.
I had this same question some time ago and found this pic that I took showing how the socket won't fit onto the lower nut on the 9 inch chunk...
I have a rear end laying here that looks just like that. Its not a 9"......or an 8". I did not know what mine was. Guess I know now.
