O/T Any South Carolina H.A.M.B.ers?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lo c dan, Jan 12, 2007.

  1. The possibility of relocating to the Columbia area is an offer I've recieved today. And was wondering about the does n don'ts. Neighborhoods, cost of living, milk, bread ect. The states web site just shows cookies n cream. Correspondence requested. Thanks - lo -

I live just outside Columbia ... it was 75 degrees here today and will be the same Saturday and Sunday ...

Not really a big car scene ... have to travel a couple hours for most any decent events ... but three interstates junction here ... :)

GG in Charlotte NC , AutoFair swap meet in Charlotte are 2 hours away. Pigeon Forge/Gatlingburg/Knoxville is a little over 3 hours away ...

A couple of local cruises ... once a month ...

    Land/houses are reasonable ... if you stay out of town ( 15 to 20 miles ) ...
    Schools are OK ...

    What else ??

half the population of Ohio is in or passing thru SC on any given day (just look at the license plates on the freeway).

Today it was close to 70 degrees.. come on down

I'm an hour down the road in Charleston. The hot rod scene is better in Coloumbia, but Charleston is a waaay cooler town.

Over all, the cost of living is pretty close to the midwest. 150 grand will get you a decent house in a good neighborhood.

This part of the country grows everyday, so there will always be jobs, plus the winters are pretty mild and if you get away from the coast, there are some pretty solid old cars hiding around.

    Holler if you need anything.

    True ... so true ...

Charleston has Columbia beat two to one easily ... as far as a cool place to live ... I have lived there ... and in Greenville ...

There are a few HAMBers in the upstate ... Hotrodprimer, Modifiedriver, Slick 50, Shane T and a few others. Here in the middle of SC ... I am here and there are a few others. In the Low Country ... Boones, FlameAbone ... and 4 or 5 others. A few in Myrtle Beach ... a few in Rock Hill ... a few down arounf Aiken/Augusta ... The total is close to 20 or 25 HAMBers. :D

  8. Anyone else have anything to post. The weather so far sounds great. Must be nice to be able to drive the roadster year round. What do some of you do for a living? What is the cost of gas there? This post may be boreing to most, it's not bench raceing, just trying to get more of a feel for the state of mind before I visit. Thanks - lo -

    I am a bum ... and do mostly nothing ... :) ( retired from the government )

    Gasoline last night was $1.99 a gallon ... 87 octane ...
Cost of living is decent ...
100 to 150 grand buys a pretty nice place ...

It is a little warmer for the past few weeks than normal but we rarely ever have snow ... My wife was raised in Charleston and she never saw snow until she was a teenager.

NO SALT ... on the roads ... so the old cars are not eat up ... like in OHIO ...
    :)

Overall the south is a good place. like anywhere, home is where you lay your head. not going to find to many places more economical to live.. gas is cheaper then most as are alot of other cost like homes. wages are lower also (so if the wife works, she may not get the same wages. Compared to California where we came from, my wife took a big pay cut.. but the houses cost half (or more then half) and gas was $30 a gall cheaper.

We do have property tax on our cars..

Hey randy whats the taxes like up your way.

Me and ledsledbuick are here in Columbia. I run a motorcycle shop called Bad Monkey Motorworks in the Northeast part of town.

Columbia is a decent town, pretty laid back.

Our club is putting on a rat rod/chopper show this summer and otherwise working on improving the scene here in town.

  12. I live in Augusta Ga., a half hour(60 miles, depends on how you drive) away!!! Columbia is a decent town. Augusta has a pretty decent car crowd, say a 100 or so regulars. There is a Drag Strip in Jackson S.C. that runs every Thursday night, test and time trials, about the same distance away. Carolina Dragway, web site.....You would be about as far away from Charlott as Atlanta I think. If you move in P.M. me and I'll slide up that way to drink your beer and help move furniture on this end!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. I moved here in Feb '77.

I hate it and wish I was still up in New York.

Anybody that tells ya' otherwise is lying!!!!!!!!!!

30 years in a place you dislike ???
Frank , I thought you were smarter than that ...

I-95 is still paved ... and runs both ways ... :D

  16. Deuce,

    Don't tell anybody, but I wasn't tellin' the truth ;) .

It's getting too crowded down here with all those damn Yankees moving south, so for about the past ten years I tell all those northerners I hate it here  . Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be workin'. Ya' still see a steady stream of U-Hauls coming south and none goin' north.

I think I assimilated down here pretty good. Ya' see, I was real pissed when they took the flag down off the state house capitol building. And.........."I don't care how the hell they do it up north!".

Ya' couldn't move me back up I-95 with a stick of dynamite attached to my ass .

Do ya' think I'm a little smarter now :D ?

PS: Don't tell anybody ya' caught me lying  .

I lived in Anderson for a few years back in the 90s. Boss said Michigan was the place to be so I packed up the truck and moved the family...I still have a buddy in Anderson (he's in China for work this month) and I can't wait to go back to visit when he gets back.

I don't know much about Columbia but I been to the stadium and they love football and girls there!

I'd go back in an instant but if bad weather is forecast, there is a run on bread and milk at the Bi Lo grocery and they can't drive in sleet, snow, ice...and why would they want to? Why would ANYBODY want to?

If the place is going to fly you down for a visit, tell them you need to bring your wife to make sure she likes it, tell them you need to stay for the weekend to look around, and get a vacation out of it. My buddy did that in Myrtle Beach and then didn't take the job after the 3rd interview (he did fish every interview!)

My sister-in-law and her husband just moved to N. Carolina. I live in NE Georgia...this whole swath of country is about the same as far as climate, people and cost of living go. I grew up in Toledo, and lived in Floriduh for 7 years before I moved here.
It's wonderful. For scenery, mild winters (I do miss snow though), fall colors, hunting/fishing, overall the people are really nice...It's a fantastic place to raise kids. From one Yankee to another, y'all come on down South!
(but they really DON'T like it when you say "we did it this way up north". And some of them are still pissed about Sherman's march to the sea.)

No you don't. Look at all the things you would have miss if you never came down here. Me, Sweet Ole Bob, Billie Jean, Bubba, and don't forget Jack. Look at the empty place in your world if you had never known Jack.

I caught that same drift about Sherman when I was down there. I work Michigan State stuff and they'd rip on me about how bad Yankee's play football.

I met a lot of great folks down there and had a great experience. And if in a few years you don't like it, you CAN go home. Plus you've got the experience. I will warn you, everyone that used to live in Ashtabula now lives in SC! I met about 20 people and worked with 3 all from Ashtabula, Ohio.

You'll fit in fine, you seem like good folk. It is a great place to have a new beginning.
