  1. But nowhere else can that happen...

    Ya think?

Justice? yeah... for sake of another line of crap from this brilliant source let's say he did rip you off on purpose. You're idea of justice for an Econoline with a fragged block is to burn his house down?

    ignorant-fucking-internet-tough-guy-bullshit...

    My god you're awesome

Read the paper or watch TV lately? There's a lot of crazy motherfuckers out there in the world and you never know what's going to happen when you hose one of them; treat others as you would have them treat you. Just sayin'.

I once bought a '57 Chevy with some red oxide primer on the door. Looked at the car twice, both times at night in a dimly lit garage. Bought it, trailered it 14 hours back home, unloaded it and noticed a 3/8-inch deep grinder mark in the door, about a foot long.

I learned my lesson--red oxide primer will hide A LOT of sins. Also learned not to look at a car in a dimly lit garage.

I called the guy up, called him every name in the book, posted on a bunch of websites what a crook he was, took out an ad in his local newspaper proclaiming what an unscrupulous bastard he was, and then, just for good measure, I drove 14 hours back to his place and hit him in the head with a 2x4, set fire to his house and shop, jumped up and down on the roof and hood of all three project cars he had sitting outside, fucked his old lady on the front lawn, pissed on his front porch, knifed his tires, kicked his dog and then did a couple of big ol' nasty donuts in his lawn before getting back out on the road and driving home.

Actually, I shrugged and said "Looks like I'll either have to learn to weld and make a patch panel for the door, or buy a new door."

Don't be a dumb ass. Nobody buys a 40 year old anything that's missing a carb and expects it to not need a new motor.

So wow, you're going to burn the guys house down because you didn't take 5 minutes to look over a major purchase? Its is shame you can't trust people that you're buying a car from these days? What country are you living in? Is this the first car you've ever bought? No sympathy. I'd probably create another screen name if I were you, but luckily I'm not.

If you go over to burn his house down you'd better take someone smart with you. Like you should have done when you bought the truck. You do realize 64' was over 40 years ago right? Maybe you thought the block was still under factroy warranty.

That sucks about your block. I see adds for cars all the time that say will run with a carb, or carbuerator missing, or carb needs rebuilt. I always assume this means the motor is junk.

  9. You've gotten some relevant comments here in reply to your posts, so I'd say this falls under the category of..."Now I Know." Let it go. Six cylinder Ford engines are dirt cheap anyway...odds are that you can find a running example for $100 or so.

Yes, it sucks that he "took advantage" (assuming he knew....); I wish the world wasn't like that. Nevertheless, it is. Again, file it under "Now I Know." & move on. Good luck with the truck. Econolines are cool. :)

...and unless I missed in while scanning all the posts, we still don't know how much you spent on it. I once sold an old Tempest to some guy that saw it in my buddy's personal junkyard, which was where it had been languishing for a few years. It was a case of "Hi, I'm eopshgnba, Ed told me that Tempest on his hill belongs to you, how much do you want for it?". I threw a price at him, he bought it, then called me a few days after he drug it home to bitch about the fact that the floorpan was rotted out of it! Again, I know my friend Ed, and I'm sure he didn't tell him that he wasn't allowed to lay on the ground and look under it; in fact, I'm sure he would have lent him a jack, had he asked for one.

You took a gamble on a non-running truck and lost. He never said it ran. Let the buyer beware.

Anything with no carb automatically means a junk engine in my book, mayyyyybe rebuildable but can't even count on that.

  14. Here is what I see, you bought what could have been the coolest ride in town. Now it's a piece of sh*t because of all the drama. Every time you look at it, it will say to you "Loser" just because the guy didn't tell you it needed a motor. Would you have paid cash if you know the engine was crap? How proud will you be if you finish it and post on the HAMB? I buy crap all the time and lose money, I'm a musician. I have a $1100 amp I was going to sell for $500 what a deal. Grow up, burning peoples houses down will put your ass in jail, then the Econo will rot in your yard.

    Poeple do make me mad:mad:

I don't think I've ever bought an old car that didn't have at least one problem that I missed while under the "I have to have this!" spell.
"Rust free" 49 Plymouth had no rust in the roadsign floorboards, "runs great" 68 Chrysler with no reverse, etc....
It goes with the territory! No point getting pissed off.
Hole in the block is an opportunity to put a bigger engine in it!

I got bit too...bought Dodge Van from a guy who said it needed a tuneup...drive it home (about 6 miles) could tell it was running on 7...decided to change the oil first...that's when I saw a hole in the oil pan and part of the rod laying in the hole.

When I pulled the engine, I could put my thumb in the hole left in the crank, I wondered why the oil light didnt come on..until i found the wire disconnected under the dash

I figure he'll get his someday, karma has a way of coming around.

Ha Ha...I thought of that, too! Maybe it's Fate's way of letting you know that your Econoline (or should I say 'EconoWHINE'?!) really wants a V8!

  21. Here's what I would do: Next time ya' see the guy, tell him ya' put a carb on it and it fired right up and runs great. Watch his face. That'll tell ya' if he deliberately screwed ya' or not. You have no other recourse but the personal satisfaction of knowing the truth.

I know you're catching flack here for sayin' you're gonna' burn his house down. We all know that's just a phrase used by someone who figures they've been screwed DELUXE. I've said the same a few times. It's an idle threat, but it does get attention. If there were as many houses burned down as folks claimed they were gonna' do it, we'd have the fireman working 24/7.

I, for one, do think that if he knew the engine was bad, he should'a told ya' that. Chances are ya' would've bought the truck at the same price anyway.

I'm absolutely amazed that most of the posters to this thread are laying "blame on the victim" (you). To do that is bullcrap. "If" the seller knew the engine was blown-up, he has an obligation as a seller to tell the buyer that. Posters here that say he wasn't obligated are folks I don't want to do business with.

Education costs money, how smart do ya' wanta' be?. Doesn't make any difference if it's buying books, paying tuition or getting screwed in a business deal. You'll be smarter now from this experience and now know that many folks in the selling world put meaning in the phrase, "Buyer Beware".

just to be clear, I think there's a lot of people, me included, who feel there's a pretty good chance the seller had no clue. If he DID know, then yeah, he's a douche.

Brad, thats the funniest thing I've heard all damn week.

Buyer of the econoline...bottom line is yo did get screwed, by yourself. You don't have any right to be pissed at the guy who sold it to you. He didn't misrepresent it, you made the truck out to be nicer than it was in your mind and when you found out the truth you got mad. You fucked up...let it go.

    OK look.

Right now it feels like you got a hot Vicks and ground glass enema.

Eventually the feeling will go away and you'll be able to play with your new toy.

I learned a long time ago that experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

You just got some experience there bud!

Oh, and good luck with the truck, they're cool vans.

I'm in agreement with you all the way. This van might've been bought to be sold on a quick turnabout and the owner never checked things out. If I haul home a car missing any engine components, I automatically assume that the motor needs rebuilt at the least or is junk. I buy a car or so a year on eBay. Most require towing my trailering them some distance to haul home. Most I buy on the buyer's word, including a '88 Lincoln LSC I drove home from Oklahoma. OT here, but a beautiful car with all of the maintenence bills and nicer than I anticipated. I drove to NJ to pick up a '90 Lincoln LSC for the complete EFI 302 setup. Though the seller said it ran well, when I got there it was missing the starter, alternator and a few other parts. The dude said he used them on his own Lincoln and I had no reason to doubt him. I hadn't asked specifically if we could fire it up. Instead of getting pissed, I paid the dude ,marked this auction off as not being as good of a one as usual and brought it home. Besides the other parts including the complete EFI setup I pulled from the car, I have a roller cam 302 HO in my garage to rebuild. Big deal..... Unless I can run and drive them, I sell my stuff with a "5 feet or 5 seconds" guarantee also.

A little story about my econoline "experience".

I bought a econoline van from a guy that was a regular at the motorcycle shop I worked at.

He said "My dad just had a set of rebuilt heads put on it." I started it and drove it home no problems. Needed a tune up, but otherwise good to go.

I had it for a few days and this guy stops buy to ask if it was for sale.

Well I figured I would sell it and buy a trailer, my wife hated it anyway. So I told the guy what the previous owner said, but I thought it needed a tune-up and that I knew nothing else about it. I sold it to him for the exact amount I gave for it, trying to be nice.

Guy leaves my house and about four hours later I walk outside to take out the trash when I notice the econoline is in my yard. Not parked in the driveway, but right in the middle of the yard.

Guy knocks on my door about two hours later saying I screwed him. I said what happened? "It just died." he replies.

Well, lets go take a look and see. Motor turns over and sounds fine. I tell him to hit the gas pedal a few times while trying to start it. No change, so I pull off the coil wire and no spark.

I call my wife and ask her to bring me a coil on her way home from work, she does and the thing fires right up. "Sounds better, it still needs a full tune-up." He looks at me like I am speaking german. "It needs plugs, wires, cap, rotor." and the same look.

I ask, if you do not want it I will be happy to buy it back now that is runs better.

    No he says and leaves.

7 months and 4 days later I get a phone call.

"I am at the machine shop and I want $1200.00 for YOUR half of the bill."

I said what are you talking about? "Well you said it had a rebuilt motor."

"No I told you the previous owner told me it had rebuilt heads on it."

"Well I need $1200.00 for YOUR half of the machine shop bill."

"So you put a $2400.00 motor in a $700.00 van? Is that correct?"

    "Well, ummm."

So I said let me talk to the machine shop owner.

    "Sure, he will tell you."

"Hi this is ****** from the machine shop."

    "How do the heads look?"

"What....., well they look good. He is here because there is a hole in the top of the number 7 piston."

"Do the heads look like they were rebuilt recently?"

"Yea, they do not have much wear at all."

"Good, can I speak with the vehicle owner again."

"So let me get this straight." "You bought a old van from me for $700.00 and drive it for 7 months and now I am supposed to pay you for a very inflated machine shop bill?" "So I give you money and you keep the van?" "Am I correct so far?"

A few choice words, etc, etc.

People with that (your) mentality confuse me.

I have made plenty of mistakes when buying and selling these old rides, but that is the nature of it. One involved pepper spray from a New Mexico cop and a Ford that "ran and drove great" but would smoke so bad when it got over 55 mph that you could not see the back of the truck for the smoke cloud due to very bad rings and 3 busted pistons.

When I make a mistake, I just do my best to get my investment back by either parting it out or writing it off when it goes to the crusher.

I never try to screw anyone over, period. I know that there are alot of people just like yourself that think because you made the mistake the seller should feel sorry and reimburse you for your troubles.

I have had the argument more than once with my wife, but like I tell her. "I bought it so it is my problem now."

Wow...these guys r droppin the hammer on ya...I think it comes down to did the seller know it had a whole in it...and you cant prove that now...so go yell at him and get it out of your system. In reality, it was a cheap lesson. Which motor is it? 170,200, 240? any of them are cheap to pick up but only the 170 and 200 will swap without any extra work..get a 200. Clifford performance offers some hop up crap for them and have some fun with it...Ecos get all the stares!
