We have the world famous Hot Dog Shoppe in Warren, OH. Their cheddar and chili dogs are second to none as are their homemade cheddar and chili fries. They've been written up for great food all over hell as has Wedgewood Pizza. It's won several national awards and has the best pizza I've ever eaten. Unfortunately, neither are a car hop hamburger restaurant. We fall short there. We had a drive-in called Freddy Franz's down the street which had been an old A&W. The place was completeltly refurbished, the new owner put up a movie screen for cruise nights and sold great food. But the cruisers never showed in great numbers, the locals didn't patronize the place well enough, so Freddy's went out of biz at the end of '05. There's an A&W in Boardman with well organized cruise nights, but it has typical A&W food. ...:( I can't think of a single 'burger joint in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman Oh. area that I'd recomend. I can make better burgers and fries at home than the usual McD's, Wendy's or Burger King's. I wish we had a White Castle here. I LOVE those 'flaps.....:D

  4. Jan, I second the Hot Dog stand, that place is like a time warp....Kick ass dogs......We cruise locally at Annebells Diner in Mentor Ohio. Chuck Hamilton has been doing it for 20 Years now, and in my opinion it has made cruising in Northeast Ohio very strong. The food used to be better but is still good. Down the street from my house is Scooters Dogs, they are damn good also, Evel and Bleed can attest to that as I treated them when they were here for MFS IV..... Some day my diner in the garage with make the best HAMBurgers in all the land, and will only be open to Hamb members!

  5. I know of lots of good places to eat around here, but far as drive-in's, we have two in Oshkosh. Ardy & Ed's and Leon's Frozen Custard. Both are traditional hometown drive-in's. One is seasonal and the gal's wear roller skates, the other is year round but still old school. Joos burger, BBQ sandwiches, burgers, shakes, malts the whole deal. In-your car seating and picnic tables only.
There is also a local drive-in that has spread into a local chain. Tom's Drive-In. They have good driven-in food.
There is the Pequin in I think Manitowoc. Squablow showed me that place a few months ago, great traditional drive-in stuff. Cheap, greasy and good and the business is old as dirt and hasn't ever changed I guess.

What about Porky's in St. Paul, MN. I am sure a few of you know that place. We hit it every year at 50's.

  6. We usually cruise over to the Chick Inn, a little drive in joint in Ypsi that's been there since '53. I can't comment on the burgers though, I've never had one! I always get the Hammy Sammy with onion rings.

My favorite burger is from the Starting Gate Saloon in Northville, MI. Get a 'gate bacon cheeseburger, fries, a couple of beers and head over to the horse track. Which, coincidentally, is what we did last night.:D

Burger Station in Winfield,KS. Check it out if you go to the Last Run.

Has no tables or chairs. Little building, you just walk in and order, they make it right in front of you. You stand there at the counter the entire time. Great fries and potato salad. Then run to the park and chow down.

We cruise about 30 minutes to a place in Winchester, Virginia called the Backseat Bar and Grill. Pretty sweet place. Then we take about a 15 minute drive from there to the Dalkes Family Drive In. Makes for a sweet cruise and get together spot.

not really a burger joint, but a bunch of hot rod guys meet at the Busy B bakery on the weatherford traffic circle in SW Ft. Worth on Sunday mornings...some really cool hot rods and good pasteries...

  17. Angelo's on State College in Anaheim...used to have car hops to cars but now just to tables in the joint and on the patio. Good chili burgers, killer onion rings and cheap 32 oz. beers. Great place to catch a game too. Many years ago had cruise nights until the tuners over ran the place and the city shut'em down. Still a great place for a burger though...

It's not a cruiser joint, but the Clock on White Horse Rd. in Greenville is GOOD! Cheeseburger plate done "half-n-half" is awesome. Good steak fingers too.

We have the world famous Chico's Tacos here in El Chuco. Their specialty is rolled tacos smothered in a special sauce with cheese. They also have hamburgers and hot dogs. There are five locations and they are packed all the time. They ship the tacos all over the world daily. It is a place you have to go visit if you are ever in El Paso.

    Scooby's in West Chicago IL
On the corner of Route 64 and Prince Crossing. Awesome Chocolate Malts as well.

And, right next to the local drive-in movie theater.

At 2am in the morning, my answer has to be the local White Castle.....too bad they shut there shake machines down at night, though.

Another great place in EL Paso TX is Roscos burger off of Dyer right behind the Chicos. The owner has a 55 that he races. He's a chill guy that makes a mean grease burger. Its a family owned shop that makes some dman good chillis as well.

I stopped at a great little drive-in in Siloam Springs Arkansas a couple years ago. The looked at me funny when I ordered the foot long chili cheese dog and fries. Then they handed me 2 lbs of dog and another 2 lbs of fries. I was so full that I skipped the next 3 meals.

There's also Rudy's in La Crosse WI. They still have girls on skates as far as I know.

Not one but, four places come to mind.
In Austin, one of the oldest greasy spoon burgers around is at Dirty's. It's a hot rod friendly sort of place not far from the UT campus. It's been around longer than I have.
Another in Austin, more of a modern, can't get your mouth around it, do you want avacado with that, kinda joint is Hut's near downtown.
A little farther north, in Round Rock, is the Red Barn on Hwy 79. Legend has it that the founder saw his first burger back in the early forties and swore his allegiance right there at a window where 25 cents would get you a greasy patty on a bun right off the grill.
Last, if you are ever bound for Little River for the Drags, stop in Bartlett at the Blackland Burger Barn. It's on old Dairy Queen that went free agent many years ago. The menu is like you would have expected 20 years ago and the ice cream is from Brenham. You Tx folks know what I mean. :)

No burger joints here except McCrapples, Burger Shit, and Sonic. The old A&W was out of business for years and was finally torn down about two weeks ago. We do have a cool little BarBQue place tho that a frined of mine opened up a couple of years ago. Called Hot Rod BarBQue" and features tv's on the speed channel, old hot rod & drag racing photos, and nascar hoods, etc on the walls. All the workers wear T shirts with "Pit Crew" on the back. Unfortunately I've never seen a hot rod there. Or even in this suckass town for that matter. LOL

I have to drive about a half hour to get to this one but it is great!
The Wheel Inn in Warrensburg Mo. The serve Gooberburgers, hamburgers garnished with peanut butter instead of mayo or mustard. MMMMMM good! The place has been around for like sixty years. They have pictures of it inside from various eras with cars parked outside. It is shaped sort of like a wheel (hence the name) and has drive-ups all around a central building where there is also walk-in space and a sit-at the bar place. Go there sometime.

Another place but it's not really burgers or drive-in but they sell burgers and waffle fries is Dixon's Chili. They now have three locations in Kansas City area. The first was down in midtown and President Truman ate there a few times. Their chili is just seasoned cooked hamburger loose. Then you get it dry, with bean juice, with meat grease, or with beans, or with all or any combo of those. Quite different. They also serve foot long chili cheese dogs. MMMMMMM good.

Here in Mass we have two places i can think of.

Casey's in Natick which is an old rail road dining cart that was put in a parking lot next to the track and has been in business for 40+ years. Best hot dogs on earth, and really good burgers too.

And Ralph's Diner in Worcester (http://www.ralphsdiner.net/). The Alter Boys host their annual car show there. All they have on the menu is hambergers, cheeseburgers, and chili. Great food all around had one of everything when I was up there last September. And they run on the honor system too, even when busy as hell.
