I'm going to be striping one of my buddies tailgates here when the weather clears up a bit, and I had a question for you guys. I've always striped with 1SHOT, but with it being an oil based paint, it doesn't mix with clear, and thats where I'm having problems. I've never striped then cleared over it, so I was wondering if any of you guys have done it and what paint you have used. I know House Of Kolor makes a striping paint that can be cleared over, but I have never personally used it myself. Any input is appreciated!

I like the HOK striping paint...it comes already reduced...but after it's seen some air it still need reduced a little. I have had no problem clearing over one shot...just make sure it's dry good and first coat of clear should be pretty light, then you can go heavier after.

Yeah, I've heard good things about HOK, How much more does it need to be reduced? My problem with 1shot was after awhile it seemed to "wrinkle" under the clear, and I gave it several hours to set up, and was done in a paint booth.

I had one shot do that once...I think the key is the first coat of clear needs to be pretty light so it kind of seals the striping before laying down a wet coat. As for the HOK...I only used it once, but it flowed really nice right out of the can.

Yeah that makes sense, I'll have to give that a try. One of my buddies swears on HOK, I'll have to bum a can off of him and give it a shot. I appreciate it man, I'll post up my work when I get it done.

One shot makes a hardener. I use it when Im going to clear over the striping. It works good for me.

Slightly off topic, where is the best place to buy the paint and as well the different size brushes. I have 2 sons who want to try their hand at pinstriping. Would it be the local auto paint supply store or is it easier online. Thanks, Bob

yeah.. you need to use a catalyst with the 1shot or else the 1shot will run/bleed when you clear over it..

Hey on this subject another ?, I have heard that the urathane striping paint from HOK and others are just single stage urathanes like PPG Concept but with a slow reducer and catalyst. It makes sense, they're just increasing profit.

Make sure your 1 shot is dry, you can also add a few drops of hardener from your clear to the 1Shot will help. Use a good high-solids clear. Most clears now dont have reducer in em so they dont attack the paint as bad. To be safe just use HOK stripes, no worries with this stuff, and it is awesome.

For 1-shot, **** Blick has decent prices as well as for Mack 10 & 20 series brushes. Everything else, Eastwood seem to have good prices.

If you have a paint shop that is local and carries either the non-aerosol HoK or 1-shot in decent quan***ies, you might want to go that route. Especially if they have someone on site/near by that is good at striping. That way you have someone to jaw with and they might be interested in teaching your boys a few things too.

I got my wife the basic stuff that she needs to get a good start in striping from **** Blick for xmas. Shipping was reasonable and everything was well packed. Now to get her to crack open some paint and get her bushes dirty... ;)

Look in the local Yellow pages under Sign Supplies.

    Or look online,**** Blick,Coast Airbrush,Bear Air,etc.
There is probably a west coast sign supply chain,
so you don't get hammered a bad on shipping.

Get a couple Mack Series 10,only a couple bucks
more than the Series 20,much nicer to use.
