Disc Brakes for 49-54 Chevy Passenger Cars

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by TexasHardcore, Jan 15, 2007.

  1. Whats the skinny on aftermarket disc brake conversions for these cars? I've seen the kits in Speedway, but they say it won't work with stock steering and is intended for use on older cars with Chevy spindles. We picked up an '89 Caprice that we're using as a donor for the drivetrain. I've considered swapping the entire ch***is, or just using the Caprice front clip on my gal's '53 2dr Chevy but I'd really like to keep it simple and use a kit or piece one together using the stock '53 stuff and some brackets, etc. Yeah I know drums are fine, but she's little and won't be able to put her weight into the pedal to make it stop, so I have to make it safe.

    Any advice is appreciated.

I installed the MP Brakes kit on my 54. Uses all stock components and came with everything. The only hard part was "pressing" the bearing adapters on (I used a piece of fence pole and a sledge). Unfortunately I haven't put the car on the road so I can't say for sure how good the stuff is, but it all went on without a hitch.

Whoa Texas before you go pounding on those bearing adapters, just put them in the oven for about 15 minutes at 400 they will slip right on.

i used the ECI kit, works well.

you mentioned braking effort though. discs won't make it stop easier, BETTER but not EASIER, more effort. if your only consideration is the amount of effort for the lady, go with a power booster, you can run power 4 wheel drums.

I second the ECI kit. Actually, this is the 47th time I've seconded the ECI kit. Do a search and you'll find metric tons of info about this upgrade.
