Hey...just wanted some opinions....I work with a guy whos got a '37 stude that his grandfather allegedly bought new and drove until several years ago when his family took his keys away b/c of health...anyway, I havent seen it yet but he says its complete, and still has the wooden seats..I was wondering what it would be worth, and if theres any interest in those models for rodding just in case I ever needed to sell it...I've already got my hands full with the '54, but I hate to let a cool car go to waste. thanks
I say buy any Studebaker you can get yer hands on..I'm gonna get this rusty rotten ol 38 Dictator 5 window coupe just for the name and those cool stand up headlights.....
Probably worth way more to a collector as is than it will ever be worth rodded. Showing unrestored original is a big deal with some of them guys. That said its worth what someone is willing to give for it. These days almost anything is hot rod fodder. I don't recall what the lines are on a Stude of that vintage but it would probably make a pretty slick ride.
The lines on those cars are really nice. If I wasn't already working on my 60' convert, with another project on the back-burner, I'd buy it. Here's a 37' Stude 3-W: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=136359&highlight=studebaker
Hey I went to highschool with a dude with one of those. I never guessed it was a '37 ( and never asked ) I always figured it was closer to '39/'40. Good lines for sure.
That is a great looking car. Seriously. Is it just me, or does the trunk look like a toilet seat lid??
gotta ask what part of bama you in? reason being,my grandfather owned a 37 stude 2dr sedan.when he got older my cousins said that they "traded" it off for a newer car. they lived in summerville ga. just over the ala/ga line close to ft. payne ala. always wondered what happened to that car.never could get a straight answer. but i'm going to try to hunt it down.
...it's a 2dr SEDAN.....btw I live @20 west of B'ham, but the car belongs to a guy at my fire dept. that lives @ Tuscaloosa....I'm going to try to go look at it in the next few days....I'll probably buy it if I can s****e together the cash, but knowing my wife, I'll probably be reselling real soon......anyone want first dibs just in case?????
yeah would like a shot at it lmk when you get it.maybe not my grand fathers but close. how many diff. 2dr models did they make? are they all dictators?
1937 Studebaker models: Dictator Series 5A/6A - Six - President Series 3C - Eight - Two-door sedans were known as a "Custom St. Regis Cruising Sedan" Serial numbers on plate riveted to frame under left fender, I have starting and ending for east and west coast production in this book. Nearly 90,000 Dictators were made versus about 9000 Presidents. Old Cars Price Guide shows #6-$500, #5-$1500, #4-$2500, #3-$5700 - that's parts car - needs total restoration - needs a lot of freshening - typical car show car that's ok but not perfect. Dictator values are a little higher for each range, but the greatest difference is only $500 at the #3 range. These are pretty rare cars in any shape, but Studebaker is an aquired taste for most folks. Someone posted a pic of one they found in a state park on the AACA forums a while back, and was it close to me I'd be in there cutting it into pieces I could hand carry to a road to get it out of there, it was really solid and complete except for the hood.
