I am looking into an 89 700R4 with converter that is "good to go" no rebuild needed for $300. Good deal or not? Over all a good trany? After reading some past posts I am still a bit confused about having to wire a switch in for the lockup. I was under the impression that they were hydraulically done within the trany? I am not building a hi HP motor rather a cruz anywhere coupe. Is there anything special that I should do or look for during the build?
Im running a 4l60e in one of my OT cars (electronic version of the 700) so I cant help you with the wiring and what not but IMO I try and never pay over $100 for a tranny and even then I just consider it a core unless I know it hase been recently rebuild (reciepts), I have my tranny guy check it out, or I have personally driven the car it came out of. There are 2 many variables to worry about so unless you do anything I said above before buying it "good to go" woulden't cut it of me.
700r4...I agree if you buy it for $300 that is too cheap and you probably need it checked out before you install it. On a stock unit you need to retain lockup, the oil passages in the tranny are to small and when in over drive, the trans input shaft turns to slow causing a problem of over heating the forward/reverse clutches ending up in the overhaul department. wiring the converter is pretty easy, if you have the trans checked out, your builder can make it completely hydraulically lock up and no need for wires but I rather hook up wires so i can controll the lock up...good uck
here's a site with some info http://www.tvmadeez.com/ ... they have a high numerical first gear so you have better accelleration from a stop... and a overdive 4th. what's not to love? they are twice as expensive to buy if yo get a rebuilt or new one
That's not bad for functional used unit. Do rebuild it before install or gamble on pulling it back out. Research every upgrade available from Trans-Go. The 700R4/$L60 went through VERY many revisions and performance upgrades. You can get it fully updated for about $100 over the cost of a basic rebuild.
my 700R4 and converter came from a '86 IROC-Z, i got it at a boneyard for $250.00 a couple years ago. it was suppose to be in great condition and i must say it has performed pretty well. i ordered the new TV cable, the new TV plunger spring, lockup kit and the carburetor bracket kit. i installed everything myself and if i can do it ANYBODY can do it!! no big deal really. the big deal is making sure you have the TV cable adjusted properly so you don't burn it up the first 15 minutes you drive it. check out www.bowtieoverdrives.com and read everything you can find there about the 700R4. good luck with it, keep us posted on your progress, mike
If you decide to go with the 700R4 we have just finished our new lockup kits that allow you to run this transmission without all the work to install a computer controler. These will be available at a discount to Alliance Members as soon as Ryan gets everything completed. In the meantime you can pm me or e-mail through the website at www.carartonline.com/rebelwire.shtml Glenn
I bought a core for a $100 from a local yard and spent $500 on a rebuild/w converter. The lockup conversion is real easy(basically you swap a one wire module for a two wire), here is a pic of the one I did, I ordered it from TCI. Oh be sure you get your TV cable adjusted just right or you will kill your tranny. I am running a Holley carb, so they make the correct adapters to work with the factory cable, I'm sure edelbrock has them too.
If It Is A Real 89 700r4 It Is Already Wired Internally For 4th Gear Lock Up No Computer Or Anything Needed Just Run A Single Wire That Is Ignition Hot To The Four Pin Plug To The Pin That Is At The Left Front Tire That Is The Power Up Lead To The Switch In The Trany Super Easy
Anybody ever bought or heard of this guy? http://www.maddog-transmissions.com/ I've talked to them and them seem really helpful and knowledgable, but............?? About $1500 shipped for the hi-perf one. I mean I dont have the money for it right now but I need somethin thats going to withstand a 406ci that I'm gonna be puttin in my coupe eventually. Any ideas?
I knew the HAMB was the correct place for my question. Now I have 1 more question. How can I tell the year of the trany? I am being told that it is a 89 700R4, is there a way i can make sure?
Should have a tag on it with some codes that can be posted here or googled. I have a 700R4 in an '89 Suburban with 85,000 miles on it, I've beat the hell out of it, I get crappy gas milage in the truck but it has never had a problem.
Street rod transmissions in Independance MO. sells rebuilt 700R4's with torque converters and the valve body from a corvette so you can do WOT when in Overdrive. They were $550 a bout three years ago
I just got two for free off the Kansas City Craigslist - good stockers out of Camaros! One's 100% fine, the other needs a front pump. Also, if you have any questions, here's a link: http://www.700r4.com/sitemap.shtml Give 'em a call. ~Jason
if the tag isn't there, the ID will be stamped inoe the case on the right side just above the trans pan. if that ID starts with 9 it's an '89. it should look something like (9 XX X # ### C) where X is letters and # is numbers.
Very well thank you to everyone for the help. I will look at the trany this coming weekend and go from there.
