I know this is a grey area. lets say that a person lost their ***le or bought vehicle without one. So he/she goes to one of these ***tle selling guys and get a new one. but wouldn't the new ***le have a new vin#. My question is How would one use a ***le that has a different vin# than the original car has. again this all hypothetical. Because no one would ever think of doing something that might be, shall we say,of a non legal nature?
First thing is does Sask allow you to get a new ***le being the old one is lost? Beats the heck out of paying some ***le company for a ***le
If you lost the ***le, you can go to your state's DMV and request a new ***le. They will have you fill out a bunch of paperwork and submit a VIN rubbing. One of the papers will probably ask you to swear that you owned the car for at least the last 7 years or something. If everything is on the up and up, they'll fix you up a legal ***le and mail it to you. EDIT: OOOPS, I didn't see you were in Canada. Hell, I got no clue what goes on up there. Good luck. .
I've never bought a ***le for a car that didn't belong to it. If a ***le is needed I have a local licensed Hulk Hauler file for an abandoned Vehicle ***le. As long as the car isn't on File as Stolen I get a correct origional ***le with correct Vin numbers on it, No problem. Cost's about $150.oo. On the flip side if the car is Stolen it goes back to the correct Owner. After all, if someone was Crafty enough to Steel your car wouldn't you want to get the remainders of it back? Also you would find out where it had been and you could "DEAL" with the Dirt Bag one on one. Keep it Legal! The Wizzard
As far as I know a ***le is not necessary in Canada to register. Now, if a car is being imported from the US, they might need it for customs.
loseing your own ***le and buying a car without one are totaly different. your own ***le is a matter of record and all you have to do is pay for a duplicate. but a car with out a ***le can be a can of worms you need to know your local laws.
In some states, Mi. is one, a lost ***le is a lost ***le. On old cars like we are talking about it's been so long since they were last registered that they aren't even in the system. All you have to do is show a bill of sale and they run the numbers as long as it comes back not reported stolen you get a new ***le this way the vin numbers match the ***le.
Here in AZ...i have bought cars without a ***le...i found the easiest way to get a ***le is to go bonded....you fill out some forms....the DMV will give you the info for the last reg'ed owner...and you write him/them a certified letter in the last owners name only...asking for a ***le to the car you bought....most times my letters come back unclaimed....then all you do is get a bond on the car...they charge $15 for every $1000 in car value..this is set by the DMV...min charge $100...and DMV issues you a clean/clear ***le.....John in AZ
I think if you have an actual VIN, this whole ***ling dilemna is not big deal. The government is only interested in revenue. I recently ***led a '28 pickup here in FL. I first had the police do a VIN verification statement - the VIN was clearly visible on the top of the frame rail. I walked into the DMV with that paper, and basically said, "I want to ***le this in my name - the guy that owns it, wants to sell it to me, and has no ***le. He lost it, burned it, who knows." They ran the VIN - obviously not in the computer - handed me a single sheet of paper, an affidavit for the owner to sign saying the truck was really his. I took that to the guy I bought it from - had him sign it, I signed it. Back to the DMV the next day - BAM. Printed me a fresh new ***le in all of about 20 minutes time and 2 trips. The REAL problem we are all going to face in the near future is when we have NO VIN - repro bodies on a repro frame....now what do we do??
in Texas it is a bit harder to get a ***le "legally." I watched the process go through a bonded ***le broker and after $250.00 still no ***le, then went through DMV and they wanted to ***le a "modified" model a that did not have theoriginal motor and the numbers on the frame not legible as a 2006 model...a ***le "old registration" from NY was purchased and in a mater of 20 minutes and 95.00 plus the green sheet and inspection fee of 14.50, the model a had plates and a ***le.
my past dealings in canada have been that providence's only use the registration. the last car that i brought into the states i went with the owner to his insurance company and they gave me proof of ownership. a local insurance company in your town should be able to help you. here in washington state you have to bond the vehicle for 3 years to get legal ownership if all you have is registration and bill of sale provided it doesn't come back stolen. the strange loophole to our state law is you can legally sell parts but not as a whole unit without ***le as long as vehicle is not stolen.
