Godspeed, Benny. He was one of my favorite drivers back in the day, one heckva good color commentator and a super nice guy. Hopefully he's now in Heaven racing with the Fireball, Curtis Turner, Davey Allison, Neil Bonnett, JD McDuffie, Bobby Hamilton and the rest of the passed NASCAR Greats. Jan...shedding some tears writing this post
Benny was what a true champion should be. Skilled, driven, smart, humble. He will be missed, especially those of us who looked forward to his comentary from the booth on race day. Godspeed Benny. Frank
I have the urethane nose from Benny's Kings Row Shops Chevrolet Laguna that won the 1975 Daytona 500, he gave it to a friend of mine for his ARCA car and he never used it. Rest in peace Benny.............
Even though I never actually met BP, I felt as though I knew him personally. He was truely a great guy, and we will miss him a lot.
WOW, it was obvious he was sick from his last few NASCAR show appearances but did not realize it had gotten that bad. RIP Benny
It always hurts when the good guys go. All around, a great racer and the kind of guy you know you could enjoy having a beer with. Great racer, Great announcer. Rest in peace by friend.
R.I P. B.P. I saw him race in a Late Model at Lorain County Speedway in Ohio around 1972. He ran through the fence in turn three, Drove down the service road behind the pits and came back out on the track to join the field on the yellow. Saw him race in Cup at Michigan in 1975. When he did TV he did it from a driver's perspective you know Been There, Done That. I will miss him.
He showed up at one of my local tracks during the MIS race weekend. The place went nuts, young and old. I quit watching NASCAR two years ago. I couldn't take the Toyotas and the political correctness. BP was a link to a time when NASCAR was great and now that connection is gone. He was one of the good ones, this is really sad.
he was good people. i met him at bristol years ago. A perfect gentleman and some one we could all look up to. RIP Benny.
He won the first race I ever went to... the 1984 coca cola 600, back when it was still at Atlanta, down in Hampton, GA. I'd read that he was in ICU with complications... That's a shame. I guess Earnhardt will have someone else to help keep him in line now. hah! -W
I was fortunate enough to meet BP three times. Once in Bristol, once in a Richmond parking lot after the race-gave him a bottle of water, and once in Milwaukee. Ironically the Milwaukee event was a walk for cancer on the racetrack. What a guy. Just as easy and friendly as he appeared on TV. Always smilin' and always had a good word about everyone. He was a truly neat person and he will be sadly missed. Kermit
A true credit to the sport. Certainly someone many of the current crop of racers (and sports stars in general) could take a lesson from. I'll miss him. Suffice to say: "the outside retaining wall" gets us all in the end. '
What a bummer, Bobby Hamilton and BP both in one week. Time to make another contribution to the Cancer Society to lick that big C. RIP BP
We got to meet him a few years back. My wife bought a copy of his cook book and he signed it for her. Even SHE enjoyed meeting him. Journey well Benny...........
Truely one of the greats, on the track and in the booth.Lord, we ask that you receive his soul. See you later Benny.
R.I.P. Benny, I could hear you now. OHH MAAAAN!!!!!!!!!! 1963 Mt. Clemens Race Track In the summer of 1963, I was the track photographer for the Mt. Clemens Race Track. Races were three times a week featuring the Super Stocks as well as lesser divisions. Pictured here are two of the best drivers of the era, Benny Parsons (#98) and Danny Byrd (#08) battling it out on the half-mile oval.
RIP Benny. My wife is an Onocology RN and when she heard BPs diagonsis, she said "If the cancer doesn't kill him, the treatment most likely will." Apparently that's what happened. The cancer was in remission but he was dealing with the after effects of the treatment. Anyone remember the "Buffet Benny" segements he used to do years ago?
