My pop's been consiering running www cheater slicks on his '32 three window. Are there any down sides to the tires? I think they'll look *****en, but just wan't to check and see if anyone has had any bad experiences. He'll be running chrome wheels w/'50 merc caps 14x5 & 15x8. Thanks -FFJ

Only two I can think of: Rain and Snow.

  4. If you are accustomed to driving in the snow and have a level head they arent bad. The Cheaters that are on my touring spent a whole summer on my 54. Mine have no cross grooves, they would help a lot in the wet. I remember Ryan telling a tale of a couple hundred+ miles on the interstate with his in the rain......................just gotta play it safe. FWIW, the bias plys on the Rocky33 were as hairy to drive as my cheaters.

  5. Havent had the balls to take my slicks into the snow, and I dont mean my freshly shorn sack:D

Wet is not a big issue as we get about 7" of rain anually. Snow occurs maybe one week a year and it doesn't stick at that. Note my location (dry). Other than that my dad will never let the car ever see snow.

  8. Then do em! A side note, I got mine to break loose at hiway speeds, partly due to a large corner and dusty roads from a previous snow/salt.

I have been totally happy with mine, do a search here, lots of good things posted about cheaters. Hell, I think Ryan had 15K+ on his before he killed one? (trust me, 15K from him is like 115K from anyone else:D )

I've got about a thousand miles on a set of Speedway Hurst cheaters.
I haven't had any problems with them. I've also had the car ('63 Fairlane) in the rain several times as well. When its raining, plan on driving 45mph or under...and stoplights can be hairy...and don't take any corners too fast...but other than that, no problems.

Actually the only time I've had them break loose on wet pavement was at a stoplight and I goosed it a little just for the hell of it.

Just drive like you have some brains, and they should be fine.

I have run them on my 55 for about 4 years. They are only as bad in the weather as you drive them. I have had them in a dusting of snow, with 4.56 gears and a spool... it was interesting.

I did finally loose it in the worst rain storm I ever drove in-it was a charity show for a friend of a friend...
I don't think my regular w/w tires would have saved me there.
The only down side is that many sets take considerable weight to balance.

Don't be afraid, wounds heal and chicks dig scares (thank GOD).

I've heard there are radial www slicks. Is this true? Does any one have any brand preferences. I know some have adverse feelings toward coker, and have seen some recomendations on the Big Olds post, but what about for slicks?

    Hellbilly,
Dang! are those the Hurst Cheaters? You just sanded them down to the whitewall? If so, thats coool. Wow.

I was really lucky with mine, I wanted the blackwalls and one side of my pair had NO letters on them. KRAZY.

Just stay out of the rain. I ran 30x9 goodyear slicks on the street behind a Pontiac 455. I took her out in a light drizzle once coming home and had to take the back roads white-knuckled and ****-clenched.

Also had a good friend take out his quarter panel on his buford after getting stuck in the rain with bald mickey's.

I guess it depends where you are and how many cars you have. I'll be running wrinkle-walls on the Catalina after the new motor goes in, but by then she won't be the daily cruiser.

I got caught in a MAJOR downpour in my Chevy II (High 10 second car) once. There were regular cars in the ditches all over the place... actually, the car that was two cars ahead spun out and took out the guy right in front of me.

I was at a carshow about 25 miles from home when it started to rain (I got a trophy! ), I got about 3 miles before the road was wet enough to be like I was driving on ice; Then it REALLY started to rain!!!

My car has 30x13.5 MT ET Streets, and a spool... about the worst combination you could come up with for ****py weather (also no wipers or heater/defrost).

I'd drive a few miles, then pull into a parking lot and use my T-shirt to wipe the fog off of the windows (I know you GMB are pretty excited about the thought of me driving around with no shirt on! ), then go a few more miles, etc...

It took me 90 minutes to make a drive that normally takes 25, but I made it in one piece (although my heart was racin'!).

It's entirely do-able, as long as you know how to drive, and aren't in a hurry!

Slicks are best suited for muddy hill climb races. :) :)

As everyone has said it in the rain you get to pay attention to your driving. I have run the last couple of years with slicks and I like them. The worst is trying to travel the intersates with them, the grooves in the roads hols a lot of water and it makes life fun when you cross the puddles.

Does anyone know where I can find an 8" or 8.5" radial www cheater slick. I've seen 8" bias plys and 10" radials but not what I need. Thanks -FFJ

OK sounds like a lot of road experience, but has anyone used them on the track? I was wondering if they'll hold together up around 110-120 mph. Any tread seperation problems?

This may sound stupid, but how about just pulling over and waiting for the rain to stop? A lot of rain showers p*** pretty quickly--especially if it was clear earlier in the day.
I didn't run slicks (but will on my '57), but when I lived in Florida my buick didn't have wipers or a defroster. Rain X wasn't cutting it at the time either. It'd rain, I'd pull over and read a book I kept in the glove box. 20 minutes later the rain was gone, and I was back on the road.
    Just a thought.

2-toned, Did it ever occure to you to pull over and allow the traffic that was piling up behind you to p***. I don't blame those behind you giving you a bad look as they finally got a chance to get by. Next time you might consider others on the road, they have places to go to.

It rains differently in other parts of the country. It's been raining for like 40 days here in NJ. I'm about to go kick Moses in the nuts. He lives down the block.

I do remember running north on 95 through GA ******* and blasting right through a rainstorm in 10 minutes without getting wet. Tried the same thing in MD and gave up after getting soaked.

two downsides, on top of the wet road issue

one is that the square tire edge tends to ride the ruts in pavement giving an undesireable rear steer action.

the other is that they tend to make you drive like they look, always peeling out and ****.

We will have what you are looking for sometime this month. The tire looks very similar to our DR3 cheater slick but has an 8 1/4 tread width. The icon to the left is our cheater slick. IM me if you have any questions.
