Read this message....If you have a posted an opinion about this auction and have never attended I beg you to read this!

    1. If it is is a quality vehicle it will fetch the money.
    2. If you see a car sell for big $$$, it was probably a "quality" car.
    3. If you want a car and dont care to build one, this is the place to buy one

I have not seen one buyer get shafted in the four days I have spent there.
Buyers were paying pennies on the dollar for what the builder had in the car. Now of course the "circus" will begin Saturday when
the concept car/matching number stuff begins.

If you have ever took a car to full complete finished status then you know the amount of labor involved and cost. ANY auction car
that sold under $50K that was restored was a steal. I watched the
coolest restored VW sell Thursday morning for $12K.....You couldn't even paint the car for that cost. ( and I am not a VW fan )

Any car restored, with quality paint, interior etc. selling under $50K was a steal.....IF.....that car turned your crank.

I was impressed by the hospitality of the BJ staff. I rolled the dice, it was better than having douche-bags showing up late at
my house on Sunday to "critique" my car.
Douche-bag buyers that say things like "I wish it was red"............ then why in the Fu*&! are you wasting my time.

I think this car was a part of the HAMB board and it shall R.I.P. (as should stupid comments about the auction)

And Yes.....Iam very happy with $51K

There is a strange dichotomy between the nice rods & customs that go for much less than their build costs, and the goofy inflated muscle car prices. I can't imagine paying a million bucks for a Plymouth!

PS Beautiful Buick, Glen, and I'm glad you're pleased with your sale.

    Slight exaggeration.

I'll have to look that one up. 12K to paint a VW? Now granted, I haven't seen it.

I didn't comment in any of the BJ threads. I don't have a problem with someone spending stupid money for something they want if they have the money.

It's just me. I do not believe there is a car in the world worth $50,000 let alone more. I enjoy watching and seeing the cars. As others have noted, I don't enjoy going to look at a beat up pile that some guys thinks is going to pay for his retirement because of what he sees on television.

    VERY well said Glen.

Believe it or not there are many deals to be had at this auction. As you said most of the cars I have seen go over the block could not be restored or built for they money they sold for.

Just cant understand all the BJ bashing that goes on here, most of it is just jelousy and mouthing off. Watch, look and learn about what is going on in the market.

Thought that might be your car. (the color under the lights threw me some but the hubcaps and overall beauty made me realize it was yours)

    Congrats on the sell

    Glen,
Thanks for your post. SO happy to hear that you had a good experience and that you are satisfied with the selling price.
You have shared the build with us and now, I'm glad that seeing your baby drive away is with good feelings. Congrats!

  12. That car looked awesome rolling across the stage.

Someone got a hell of a deal.

Glen, you are right on with your observations. I read so much stuff that goes on and on with all sorts of negative statements regarding these higher end auctions. I have done quite a few restorations and I have cringed with some of these sale prices at a fraction of what it took to restore it. I would rather be a buyer more than a seller-happy you are satisfied with what you got-nice car-Jim

congrats glen, wish i could have seen it rolling across the block, hey, did the commentators mention the HAMB?

ive noticed quite a few very nice cars selling for what i thought was very cheap (not cheap to me,but cheap if i had the money:D)

another note,,i dont car if you guys dont like big wheels,,but that 71-72 black w/ white striped convertable chevelle with the 20's or 22's was ****in SICK!

  15. There are definately deals to be had for sure, but like at any auction I think some people get wrapped up and over-pay. That 77 (?) vette with the tunnel ram was not much of a deal IMO.

Thanks for the ride. Many of us have followed the build closely here on the HAMB. I was pleased that I saw it go under the gavel live. Does that make me a groupie?:D I still remember the picture you posted of it sitting unrestored in your driveway. You did one hell of a job.

A friend of mine sold a muscle car there a few years ago and also was impressed with the Barrett-Jackson staff.

I hope if you do another one you'll let the HAMB follow along again.

Maybe some day I can get your autograph you rock star.:D:D

I think it has always been cheaper to buy one done than to actually build one. The numbers are just scarier now...for me anyway.

    Great job!

I'm so happy for you Glen. It is a beautiful car and looked stunning up on stage under the lights. I hope it went to a good home. I would love to see somewhere at an event here in the midwest.

Is a seller supposed to include the labor time in the restoration cost of rebuilding a car when figuring a selling price? Do you add it up differently if you
"DO IT YOURSELF" than if you pay a shop to restore a car?

I think it's really hard to tell from TV which cars are really nice. Some of the bidding just doesn't seem consistant. Wednesday night I saw a '70 Chevelle SS 396 car go for low 40's and 3 cars later an early 60's wagon go for close to 60K.

I think most of the bashing has to do with the gold chainers giving stupid money for muscle cars.

Every hot rod, early restored car, or custom that I have seen this year went reletively cheap.

Your car is a beauty, it should have brought more, IMHO.

People... you have to understand that at an auction most prices are to be considered WHOLESALE! This goes for every kind of auction...especially houses, farms, ect.
--GLEN You need to be comfortable with knowing that some "cl***ic car sales" joint has probably just purchased your pride and joy and plans to sell it in their showroom for $85,000. It happens every day. That is the way it goes. Buy low...sell high.
If you think what I'm saying is ****, just try to sell your ride to one of those "cl***ic car sales" joints and see how much they want to give you for it. Probably pennies on the dollar.
The only people making money are the second hand dealers of these cars...definately not the builders.

PS---Glen,your ride is worth more than $51,000

I don't know you or how things are in arizona, but I can get a BJ quality paint for less than 12k.I think the real problem is it costs just as much to paint a 57 studebaker 4 door as it does a 57 chevy ragtop. The return is so much better on the ragtop. If you want to do this for the $$$ you have to pick a popular car.Watching Barret Jackson is kind of like watching the ******* channel,I'll never have either one but it is entertainment when it's cold outside!

Glen, I'm happy that you are happy with both the BJ experience (geeesh, I remember back when a BJ experience would make me EXTREMLY happy, but I'm old now) and the sale of your Buick. Your now ex-car gave me wood, so thank you for that BJ experience. The new owner should be very happy with his purchase, and if you're happy with the sale price - all is well!

Glen, that car is stunning. Someone definitely got themselves a great deal on a beautiful and very well built sedan.
    Nope.
Apparently. Plus you haven't priced paint materials and labor for QUALITY work. Yes you could go to Earl Schieb, if you don't mind them painting over the bird **** and road tar. And you'll have to factor in all the rust repair, panel straightening, and gap tightening required to have it in top shape under the intense scrutiny.
And that means that you have never priced having top-shelf work and materials used on one of your cars. That's okay if you're into beaters (I am too) but that doesn't mean that there are people with more means that have a higher standard for their cars. In that league, a $50K car really isn't that special.

I will back you on this. I do minor body repairs on our company trucks and the price of paint is astranomical. It is quite common to have $300 to $400 dollars in paint and materials just to paint a fender to match a stock vehicle. Custom work is way more expensive, between the higher quality paints and materials, and the seemingly unending labor to get the body "just right" for a high end repaint, $12,000 is a reasonable price to the get the kind of result to get the big $$$ at someplace like B-J.

I still just find such great irony in that people are paying MILLIONS for a car that Plymouth couldnt sell in '71 (hemicuda convert) its all Don Johnson's fault between that car the 84 testarossa and the '76 365 GTB daytona

Glen, you did have a nice car. I bet it was hard to let go of. The photographs posted here are amazing.
It is accurate to say that the builders of hot rods and customs and even restorers are the ones that lose out at B-J.
After reading your post in regards to "quality" cars though I'd say you've had a little too much B-J Kool aid.
And as for them treating you nice, wait until next year, or even Palm Beach, when they won't even acknowledge you or ever dealing with you.

*No harm meant in this post. Just an honest view of how B-J really works.
