Well everyone has thier opinions, and that guy probably loved it?? I "think" it is kinda kool, and the videos available at the ...nostalgiadrags.com... website seem to have a lot of these style cars on them, with lots of wild wheel spinning take offs, wheelies, and heading towards the guard rails, being straightened out ot the laaast second and they caught my attention.....???

WHAT determines wheter it is an "altered" or not??? Street freak, etc.???

  11. wheel base in relation to body. rear tires ahead of wheel wells=altered.

The builder put a C/A on it indicating he was trying to make it look like an Altered. "C" Altereds had small engines or were heavy to meet the cl*** requirement pounds per cubic inch. Altereds had up to a 25% engine setback and no street equipment was required, as compared to g***ers. 60's Altereds typically were built "front end high" or "engine high", up to 24" crankshaft centerline for weight transfer.

Stock style body, driver behind engine but in front of rear axle, 25% engine setback, that's the main rules except for safety stuff. It was a pretty wide open cl***, especially fuel altereds.

Really funny hearing the negative comments about this being a phony with all the phony g***er fans here. The altereds usually put on a real show, more so than the g***ers. Wild Willy Borsh, Rich Gauso are two AA/FA drivers that come to mind. Wild rides spinning all the way down the track and most of the time far from a straight line. These guys had balls the size of basketballs in my opinion. Wild Willy was known for going down the track that way driving one handed with his left arm hanging on the door

<------ Exactly what I was thinking!! I think from the video footage that I have seen, and also on the DYNOTONES video for modified, these guys were bad ***!! Pioneers in my opinion, thats why I was asking, I was born in '67 so I missed out on these great events in person!!! and can only experience it thru "the lens"...Ken

Altereds, g***ers, diggers, I was just a kid in the late 50's early 60's, wish I could have captured that time in a bottle. Then they started playing with the wheelbase on later model stock cars with the A/FX cl***. Seems like those days came and left in a flash.

Any of you Ohio boys know if Dragway 42 has nostalgia drags?

It's trying to be a street driven copy of a Fuel Altered.

The car is/was(?) Buzz Nye's take on a '60s altered for street use. Buzz has had any number of compe***ion cars and street cars. He owns Lucky's Speed Shop in Mulvane, KS.

I used to really like to watch the B/A and C/A cl***es back in the '60s. There were some pretty cool ones. My favorites were a yellow Fiat named "Mellow Yellow" and a Bantam coupe called "Lil' Old Ben." Oh, and beautiful black duece roadster. Didn't get the big fuel altereds in this neck of the woods or prairie, actually.

The pic of the car with all the wheels off the ground is of Nanook. One of my favorite pics of it. That pic of wild willy is awesome.

This is the definition of an "altered wheelbase" car, not an "altered". Altereds are determined by the percent of engine setback from the stock location as measured from the center of the front axle to the number one spark plug.

However - both styles of cars are very cool IMO, and Buzz Nye is a fun guy and drove that very fun car around Doodah.
    He's a joker, but ain't no joke!

  24. The best way to learn about this stuff is by reading old magazines. You learn about how hot rodding and drag racing progressed over the years. Reading old mags is the most funnest edumacation you can git! Just start picking up a couple at each swap meet. Invest a little dough and put together a complete set of Hot Rod mag from say....1956 to 1966. There are so many cool cars in there it'll blow your mind and you'll completely understand cars like that blue one.
That blue 27 is absolutely *****en!

  25. All I know is that I'd drive it. To hell with what anyone else thinks. Opinions are like ***holes. I think it's cool. A streetable race car? **** yeah.

Not a real race car? BLAH BLAH Not traditional? ZZZZZZZ Not built with ol parts? PPFFFTTTT. Who gives a ****.

    Ok, back to the shop.

Injected 327 4-speed ,4-56 ,56 Chev rear with welded spiders,
zoom headers, and all the saftey stuff, including escape hatch.

I had posted this timeslip in an earlier thread, I thought it was from my dad's Jr. Fueler- I was wrong, it was from when the Altered ran in Comp. Note the Mileanhour!

I hope when I get my altered "style" 27 Roadster on the street some wise*** doesn't try to tell me what a "real" altered is supposed to look like...

Oh yeah, I have tons of NorCal/ Fresno/ Bakersfield photos of my dad's cars if anyone would like me to post them (Ron Birch, Dave Kommel, etc.)
