I have a '57 Ford 9" that I'll be slipping under a roadster. Does anyone know where I can get some information on how to replace the pinion seal? I've heard various stories about what to be aware of.
To replace the Pinion Seal - mark the yoke and yoke nut (it wouldn't hurt to check the drag - just from reference later) and remove them. Pry out old seal - install new seal (it should have a sealant on it already) tap it in using a chunk of wood or something to prevent you from damaging it - If you are determined to hit it directly with a hammer use a plastic faced one. Tap it EVENLY by alternating your hits from side to side until it seats. Hopefully your pinion seal surface isn't all worn out on the yoke (they get a groove worn in them after a zillion miles) if it does have a groove you can either replace it entirely -or- get a Ready Sleeve and install it on the old yoke. Reinstall Yoke to marks made earlier. If you replace yoke with a new one - you will want to keep checking the drag until you are where you were before - this isn't necessarily the best way as you really ought to replace teh crush sleeve, but LOTS of guys use this method with great sucess. YMMV
that pinion seal is 1957 year only very hard to find. and the repro ones are from overseas and not very good quality! just ask me i know mike
This caveman is going to give it a shot. Thanks HemiRambler. You sure know your stuff. Mike.......I guess I know what I'm up against now. Where and how did you find a seal for your's?
I have the same delima too, of the 4 third members I could use, I pick the one that takes the expensive hard to find odd ball seal, my luck. I have a NAPA rep who found a seal, and it still leaks. I was thinking I need to replace the rear yoke (maybe worn?) but after reading this maybe I need a better seal?
i found a seal on ebay a while ago it came from canada across washinton state area. this is after i used one thats available frommacs auto parts. if push comes to shove use the one thats available in repro until you can find a good ole days one. mike
