Here I go, I got this 1 1/2 ton cab from a friend, it was sitting on it's side out in left field, (literally) and after pleading and begging I convinced him to let me build something out of it. great thing was later he told me he had a drivers door, full hood, two grill shells, and a not so great 1/2 ton pu for spare parts, like a bed. Other neat thing was that both trucks had about the same patina... so wanting to do some learning of how to build a chassis, and a hot rod, I thought this might make for a good first lesson. I've never built anything like this before so bear with me, I'm new and constructive criticism is ok too, but keep in mind that I can weld and this is not going to be just another "#$@ rod". I'm trying to use up parts in the shop, so this will also be cheap and fun.

My goal is for a salt flat style look, meaning to me, major chop, 3-4"channel, bed bobbed 10", really low stance, tall tires, full hood, hidden exhuast, to give it a more streamline look, but still racey and if it is accomplished I will be happy. SO if your still here, and not asleep, here are the shots of what i've done... hope you like it.

Looks like some excellent craftsmanship there already. I'm liking the notched front end and those "bullet nosed" rear links are cool. I look forward to following this build, keep it coming.

thanks, those rear links kinda look like bail spears to me so thats what we named em, the front end is early 40s ford, and with out using a drop axle or suicide front I wanted it real low but still behind the grill, so spring behind seems to be perfect, but kinda tricky.

  5. very cool project.. I like the looks of the rear links too.

    I'm doing a similar project with a 33 dodge.

    Keep the pics comming.

whats up man i thought that shop looked familiar. looks good.

  7. I'd cut the bed a little shorter both between the wheel and cab and behind the wheel. Not a lot, but some.
    P.S. Nice frame work!

I think the bed length is about right sinister....IMO
Tires NEED to be centered along bedsides of a pick-up or your overall proportions look quirky. Some look good with a little longer back, but for the most part you can't go wrong with centered wheels.:D
    Good looking project!

Looks Cool! Here is mine. It will be at the pileup as a project.

Mine was missing a bed. I think I can whittle something up for it though.

I think mine will end up with a 3 inch chop on it.

By the way, if you have an extra set of door handles (interior and exterior) and window/winshield cranks, could you help a brotha out?

thanks guys, those rear wheels are rollers, so with the 7.50/16s on I think the bed looks much shorter. I had the air bags so hopefully this will ride nice and sit low if needed. I'm thinking without cutting yet that it might have about a 4-5" chop, i'm also short so... plowboy i'll do some looking, there might be a front window crank, and do you have anymore pics of yours, looks cool.

Very cool. I like it so far.

Emporia? And left field? If its the same left field at the park I played college ball at, then there was a couch with a keg next to it and three guys that will heckle the hell out of ya while your playing. They did make me laugh though.

Will the SOLID mounted PARALELL rear links provide you enough movement to prevent bind?

Here are a few more pics. I pretty much just started this after the HAMB drags so this is about all I have.

I could use any knobs and gizzies you have.

I'm not sure, but i've seen many rods with same set up and they've been on the road for a while. the only thing I can think is that it would be a little rougher ride. has anyone else seen it done this way, to me it's the same as having two heim joints attached to each side, there is still no movement, just more adjustable.

plowboy yours is going to be sweet, when is your dead line?, i'll have to try and keep up. :D

Almost thought about going that route when I first picked up mine.

But decided to keep all the parts together.

There have been a number of sets and singles of truck handles recently on the Bay. Have you seen those? They went for fairly cheap. Both of your projects are looking good. Keep us up to date on the progress.

That looks really good. I'm doing a '36 that is very similar. Channeled 2", chopped 4 1/2", homemade bed is 46" long. No hood and a '32 grille. I'm hoping to get some pics tomorrow if it stops raining.

Back at it again. Took some time off to get some other stuff done, got back into it with all this snow and got the motor and tranny in and started figuring out ride height with correct wheels and tires. mocked the bed up to see how she looks all together. I was going to build headers, but I had this old dirt track set sittin here and they fit like a glove so I think there staying. still along way off but just wanted to see whatcha thought so far. I really like how plowboys sits so I may cut the grill down and lower the front an 1-2" more.

Are you keeping the artillery wheels on it? They look sweet; I even kinda like the knobbies.

Crappy weather and winter are good for a few things like shop time. Your truck looks good!
