Anybody know where I can find a used gas tank for a 49 Ford Shoebox. I have been trying to find one, but don't want to buy a new one because all the new ones are pretty expensive.
Hope to see some HAMB people in Vegas.

whats wrong with yours? You can split them apart and clean em up, weld em up and put them back together.

I have a used tank but it needs to be cleaned out as well...

    just curious-

I believe you can get away with a 60's Mustang tank, not 100% on whych years, but their flat tops make em a nice replacement from what I have heard...

Do you know if you have to cut the spare tire well out in order to use the mustang tank. I had heard that you did , but I wasn't sure. I was hoping to be able to just bolt one back up to the stock position or at least close to the stock position.

Goose........I bought a rusty 49 coupe and the trunk floor was almost non-existant. The leaves in the trunk had eaten completely through the stock tank. I found a 67 Comet with a good tank at the local salvage yard and trimmed the 49 floor to fit the tank...dropped it right in from the top...
You could adapt your 49 filler tube to the Comet [and fairlane] tank but I filled mine from inside the trunk.
It's true. You have to eliminate the spare tire well to use this tank and if your trunk floor is good, you may elect to stick with a stock tank but the fairlane/comet/mustang tank is a good option otherwise.
