Hagerty insurance....good? / bad?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by colorado51, Jan 23, 2007.

  1. You really need to expierence/process a claim to tell if an insurance company is any good. You cant say XYZ insurance company is good just because their premiums are inexpensive or they took my money and gave me coverage. The true test of how good they are comes with the claims and how they are resolved. If your old car is damaged ask them if they pay the area restoration/custom/fab shop rates or do they use the local body shop rate. If you havent used the policy you dont know .

  2. Well like I said I havent had a claim but a couple guys in our club own a hot rod shop and have had to do repairs for owners insured by GRUNDY and they were kool enough to deal with and let them do the job right...Thats why I went to grundy from brand X

State Farm also has a very reasonable plan. I just added my A to the rest of my cars.

That's funny -- my State Farm rep is the one who advised me to get antique auto insurance for my cars!

I have a Hagerty 35K agreed value policy for the last four years also, but the premium has crept up from $398 to $558 yr. Just received same quote from Grundy, $227.50 in what seems like no difference in terms. They all claim they are the best so not sure where to go ??....H

Just don't tell 'em that you might drive the car to work. I was price shopping and let this little bit 'o info slip. They said they don't insure primary vehicles. My reply was, I only want to drive the damn car not just let it sit in the drive way! Shoulda just kept the part about drivin' to work to my self.

Been with AH for at least four years now. Only problem was they wouldn't insure my in progress 39 project. The 31 near completed and licensed was good to go. Of course if you have a modified car the rates are alot higher than stock. Like three times as much. A chopped full fendered model A with a SBC meets the modified catagory. Don't know about a 38 ford coupe with V8, I would think stock configured might be good to go. Ryan ?

I've got State Farm full coverage with 250k/500k/250k liability, agreed value 35k. No mileage limit, but limited to/from and at shows, exhibitions, parades, maintenance, and road testing. (I do a lot of road testing). Costs 208.00 per year.

Last year I was rearended in My 55 Mercury. It was a hit and run. Called Hagerty they told me to take it to any body shop I wanted. I did not have to take it to several. They paid the guys price at the body shop. Never had anything easier.. I've had the 6 years now. Also 3 years ago They paid for towing my car in when the tranny went out. No problems. I've got 6 cars insured for $550 a year

I just switched to AHI, so I have yet to file a claim... and hopefully, I never will.

I was with Hagerty for 7 years... never filed, but they kept messing with my premium...

Another cool thing about AHI is that they will insure projects...

I called Hobbyist and they wouldn't insure an undercontruction vehicle that is not in the owners custody and not "on the road."

Most that I checked into at least require that you have a daily driver other than your rod. Some limit your mileage. But that doesn't mean that you can't drive them other places.

I Just Aquired American Hobbyist After Seeing It Here On The Hamb. They Were Great To Deal With And Followed Up Like They Should Have. My Only Concern Was I Bought My Car Over The Internet And They Wouldn't Cover It Until It Was In My Possession. I Used A Bonded Insured Shipper But I Felt I Was At The Shipping Companys Insurance's Mercy Had Something Happend. Meanwhile The Car Couldn't Be Picked Up Due To Weather And I Had No Protection. Luckily Everything Worked Out Fine. Chad

I have my collector car insurance through State Farm and pay $16.50 a month for 13.5k declaired value. They don't have the restrictions that some other insurance policies have, such as only can drive to shows, etc.

In 2000 I had 2 claims with Hagerty. $5,700 worth of damage to my 47 Chevy ragtop, paid without ANY hassles. Then, a couple of weeks later, that same Chevy was burned in a shop fire and was a complete loss. I had a check for the full AGREED VALUE in 28 days. The only reason it even took 28 days was they were waiting for the fire departments report. Very pleased with their service.

I've had Grundy about 3 years now. Exact same coverage only quite a bit less in premiums. The only reason I switched was cost. No doubt in my mine that if something were to happen to Big Olds and I have to file a claim with Grundy that it will be handle quickly, professionally and to my satisfaction.

Check out the premiums for yourself very easily online at

I agree, thats what I was getting at, I delt with the haggarty bunch, they paid custom/fab shop rates and it was a flawless process....I've heard nothing about the AHI side of the house, as much as we dont want to hear about mishaps they are the only way to judge "a good book" from a bad one (not saying they are bad, BUT it would be worth it to me to keep what I got knowing I wont get hassled if I get wacked or do some unplanned wacking)

any stories on claims from the grundy side of the house?

All good here for both of my cars. I also have not had to test them but when I explained that my Polara had slicks because it was a period replica super stock car they said" uh , oh , well , that's o.k. " and gave me a bill that i was more than happy about and the it hasn't changed in three years. swaZZie

I need to update my insurance on my 40 Ford Deluxe Coupe. I have been with Hagerty for 4 years now and the price has gone up to $551, zero deductible.

** I just got off the phone with American Hobbyist Ins, their price $508, $500 deductible (zero not an option), Gave me some attitude.

Grundy,s rate modified or not, made no difference was only $227. I am calling them back to double check then purchase.

I have used Hagerty for several years now on my first car. I have no damage claims but did use the free towing. Now I have another old truck (and still have the car). I have no garage space to keep the truck indoors. Hagerty will not insure it if it is not garage kept. Plus it's my new daily, what's everyone doing for that?

  26. One other point to make about insurance claims coverage. The company can have the best intentions to cover your loss quickly and fairly but get a claim rep that doesnt understand proper claims practices or is just one of those employees that gives all good reps a bad name and even the best companies can look bad settling a claim. The next test then becomes how easy is it to get a supervisor involved and if they are in like to one of the good or bad reps. The claim rep will ultimately be the one that makes them a good or bad company.

I had Hagerty for a few years on my cars but the rates kept going up. Now have Grundy for quite a bit less. I plugged in info for AHI and they were considerably higher than Grundy. I think the State you live in has a lot to do with it.

I have Grundy for my 57 Chevy Bel Air. $25,000 agreed value, no deductible, no mileage restriction, $500,000 liability. The car can't be your daily driver. I pay $197 / year.

Had haggerty, no problem, good price. I sometimes tow a Scamp [12ft. travel trailer] behind my 48 Chev. P.U. Thats a No No! No coverage if you use your hot rod to tow anything. Including a "Luggage Trailer".

That's the problem I ran into. I just wanted to make sure. I'm sure I could "fudge" it if need be but for a few bills I'm not sure it's worth it.

I was quoted like $75 per year on agreed value of $6K on the 54 Chevy I'm buying. So I call them to check and verify. Can I drive it to go pick up some groceries at Wal Mart? No. Can I drive it now and then to work? No.

Screw it, I want to drive it wherever and whenever I want and know I'll be covered. Any place with similiar prices let you drive anywhere you want at any time?
