Hello out there in car land, I am building a 29 A, 409 4spd coupe in a 60's theme. Is it ok to put whitewalled slicks or is that closer to a 50s thing. I know it also is a personal preferance thing but I am tring to stick to a 60,s theme. Also, has anyone tried the hurst recapped slicks and tested them, ala "burnouts". I do like to fry my tires, with a side of ham of course Thanks, 56n/b
There are a ton of threads about this .... do a search for the answer you want to hear http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?f=5
as long as they are bias plys i think whitewall tires on a hot rod will work ala 60's era style. ive seen plenty of 60's/70s hot rod builds w/ white wall bias plys and some pretty fancy paint jobs. my opinion, of course. im sure others will disagree. -scott noteboom
I was hoping to hear that. I think it's a great look on 5spoke rims. I hope to make the car a roller this week and push it out of the dungeon Thanks for the tips Wayne
I'm weighting the same issue with my car, imo white walls look good and scream 60'ies era show car but on the other hand they didn´t use them in the early years when hotrods were built for speed and having fun... --mika
Something else to consider if you are going to fry the tires a lot...WWW cost more then black walls most of the time. I am not sure if the white wall slicks cost more or not.
An early '60s style hotrod/show rod would be right at home with white wall slicks. There wasn't any real definate time that white walls went away they just kind of faded out with time. Lots of early '60s cars were still runnin' 'em, of course lots of early '60s cars were built by guys that were buildin' in the '50s. I think it can be chalked up to personal preference and the look of the car. Some cars just don't look right with white walls and others just don't look right without them.
I remember when my older brother bought a '53 Chevy in '62 he wanted to put wide whitewalls on it and couldn't find anyone who still stocked them. The only white walls available without "$pecial Order" were skinny whites. Yes, you can see cars in magazines from the 60's with WWW's on them but that dosn't necessarily mean they bought the tires and put them on the car in the 60's. To look like the '60's means skinny whites, to run WWWs looks 50's. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
I like your at***ude. You could still buy WWs at a couple of places in Oakland until about '68. But they weren't cheater slicks type of joints. There was a place off of Army St in the west bay that still sold 'em at least until I moved north in '68 also. But like the places in Oakland they sort of catered to the cadillac crowd.
Thanks for the tips everybody. Tough call. If I stick to an early 60s theme I would be able to do it without seeming to be out of place. The 2"WW look the best on the 5 spokes, but if the spokes are painted the right color the BW look good to. The next ? would be, when did "side pipes" come into play?
