Hello folks, here goes, I bought my 1950 2 door sedan and the vin number is BOCH187XXX
It has a 51 dash, trunk and hood, Now......... Today I'm looking around and I find the following on the side support of the front crossmember. H1CH142321
Can anyone help me find out any history on this VIN? The title I got was from illinois and it was transferred over here in florida just fine. But what's the distory of this new found VIN? Do I have to buy chassis parts for something other than a 1950? Floorboards, suspention parts? etc.. when the time comes to repair them...

    Thanks,
    Ozzie

as far as i know most chassis parts interchange from 49-53 or so. But i could be off on the end year there.

Did a little research and according to one site, that VIN says that chassis held a 226 cu inch 6 cylinder, 1951 made in chicago, same factory as the Firewall VIN was made in. I just hate having a 2 VIN problem now, if a Cop want's to be an ass, I'm gonna get F^%$#!
I just want to do a search on that other vin to make sure it was either junked in the past but still clean as far as the law goes.

what was the website you went to,to find that info?

  6. Ozzie I wouldn't sweat the 2 VINs. If the one that is visible matches your title you are set. Most cops (including most of my co-workers) don't know where to look for VIN's on older cars.

How many cops know where the #'s are in the first place , and how many are going to crawl around to find it.. I wouldn't worry about it...Grind it sand it and fill it..

Dont grind and fill the one that matches your title. Whoever built the car before probably used a junked frame due to an accident at one time or another. Grind the other one!

...If ? you are going to delet one number set, weld over it first then grind it off. May make it impossible to acid lift off a reading at a later date ??? Good Luck...H ... See cornernfool, better advice yet....

Ozzie, don't grind or weld nothing. As soon as you damage or try to make dissapear that vin, your the felon. You need to find prior history on the frame number and make sure its legal. I'm sure somebody swaped it because of an accident or rust, but if not I'd be looking for the guy who sold it to me. Your better with a legal non matching vin than no vin at all.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm definitely not gonna take it off, The cop who did the VIN verification in the first place asked me where the frame vin was and at the time I didn't know where it was, and I told him I knew there was another one but didn't know where it was. He said fine an signed the paper. I was told by the folks at lovefords.org that I should contact the folks at the florida DMV to do a search on it and make sure it's legal, and that the frame VIN would be the one the DMV would want on the title, but all this stuff will cost money in re-issuence of title, etc.. and maybe some application fee's,
Shawn, if your reading this, please get together the information from the guy you got the car from in the first place, I do not want this to come up later on. In case of an accident, the insurance investigators will be looking for these numbers, and the last thing I'd want is for the Ins Co. not to pay for anything because of a discrepency. Looks like all the car is indeed a 1951 and only the Data Plate is the 1950. We'll see what happens, next week it will go to the DMV.

I'm a little confused (it doesn't take much:eek: ). If the VIN on the body matches the title, what's the problem? Nobody is going to crawl under the car and check the cross member...are they?

I agree, that car is so old there is no telling what has been changed in the past. The vin tag on the firewall has never been changed, you can tell that by the rivets. Theres no telling how many cars out there that the frame has been changed for something or another.

  16. sound like a bunch of sweating over nothing.if the state inspected the car and issued you a title have a cold drink and enjoy your car!

I'd agree, the car has already been inspected.Someone probably had to use a different frame.Be careful of what you do to try to get to the bottom of something that is probably nothing.I knew a guy who had a truck that while it was getting inspected, they were scraping off the sticker, and hit the VIN plate, and it fell off.The kicker was,it had one under it:eek: .Well, they seized the truck, and started goin down the line of the registered owners of the truck,to try to track down who changed it.Meanwhile my buddy is screwed because it was being investigated, and he couldn't get his money back,I don't think he ever did [IMG]The guy he got it from didn't change it,so next to spending lots of money, taking him to court,or going to jail for kicking his ass, there wasn't a lot he could do.

Thanks Doc, what a bud!, LOL

I gotta tell ya the frame VIN came back clean with no thefts or others in it's history so it's all good.

I guess I'll have to pay mind to anything I order form the old car places. It all has to be for a 1951 not a 50 Ford 2 Door.

Now I'll concentrate on getting the water pumps to line up so I can use the single diamond pattern belt. So the VIN question is closed for now.. Thanks for all your help and words of grinding and covering, LOL.

Oh, and someone asked if a cop was gonna climb under the frame to look for another vin... here in Miami they do it on newer cars if the person driving it doesn't look right to them. With the theft and drug running done down here, it's not uncommon for the cops to search every detail of a car. Just today infront of the tattoo shop, the Miami beach PD
had three guys on the median, and the seats out of the car, looking under the carpet, one cop under the hood, one under the rear bumper, all at 10am, smack in the middle of Washington avenue. Ruthless I tell you, Ruthless!.

But you all have a point, an old car usually tells the cop you care enough about cars to drive and upkeep something old and they don't hassle you.

    Hi
While we are on the subject of titles, I have a question for you .
I would like to put build a car by fabricating my own frame and piecing together the rest (suspension , powerplant and body ('38 ford pickup)) Since the parts have no tiles or vin how would you go about getting a tiltle for it ? Would it need to be inspected by the DMV and issued a title? Would it be titled as a 2007 truck ? Is there any way to tiltle it as a 38 ? Or am I better off just finding a '38 truck with a title ? By the way I live in New York.
    Sorry for hyjacking your thread

    Thanks
    Matt

Does this 50 of yours have a 50 grille and parking lights and 50 style trim on the outside,I had a 51 and the VIN should be stamped on the firewall in the middle towards the top,if that number matches the frame then someone has changed the tag but since you have a good title I would not worry as no ones going to look. If you get anything titled as a 2007, it would need to have airbags, and a whole bunch of stuff you do not want to have to get into. Easier getting a title from one of the good folks on this website, do a search on Historical Documents, there are members on here that have most every title known!

    Hi Jeff,
Everything about the car I have is 1951, the dash, trunk, hood, etc.. There is no bumpers or grill or parking lights.. All that will come in about a month when I get a car I bought in the north shipped down to me, and I start cleaning up the grill and bumpers and slap those on.
I'll look for that VIN your talking about. if your talking about the numbers on the top of the firewall those are the build codes. The Vin on the 51 is only supposed to be on the frame rail and on the VIN plate.
My 1950 is definitely just a VIN plate attached to the body and frame of a 1951. Who knows what happen way back when.
All I know is I replaced the rear shocks today, and tomorrow it's getting the front and rear U Joints replaced, and driven around a bit.
I'm ordering these Water pumps from Speedway which will stay with the Thin pulleys but make my car a one belt car in the Diamond pattern, and I'll be installing an Electric Fan from the good folks at Lil Joe's Rod Shop in Margate.
