Building a Tranny Hump on the Cheap

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by swade41, Jan 24, 2007.

  1. It seems I have more time than money now days and enjoy builing things myself. I needed a tranny cover for the interior of my T project so I was looking around the garage for some sheetmetal. Instead I spotted two identical oil pans holding variuos engine internals sitting on a shelf.
So after a bit of cutting, hammering and welding this is what I came up with.
I cut the back of the rear sump off and split the bottom edge. I hammered it into a shape that would fit over the tranny. Then I cut the rear sump back into two pie sections and hammered those into shape. A few tachs and a check on the fit, then welded it solid.
The only piece I didn't use is the one laying beside the pan/tranny hump. So here's a picture of the two pans, one modified and one stock, hope you enjoy.

thats pretty damn sweet man. bolted to the floor it will look killer especially if you run the trans dipstick through the drain plug hole!!!

  4. Pretty cool. And now you have a removable transmission hump that bolts in using all the old oil pan holes. Neat idea.

Cool idea. I used the hood off of Grandpa's old Wheel Horse lawn tractor.

  13. Great idea, I've seen pans used for consoles before. I like yours, leave it as-is, I like that hammer'd look,..and leave the drain plug too. The price of old oil pans just went up! Let's see the car it's goin in...

  15. Around these parts, it's the humps that give away a tranny, not hide them...hump in their crotch, hump in their neck...

that is a good idea! I just did mine about 2 weeks ago, but i did it a little differently. I used chipboard (thin card board) which was like $1.59 to make a template then i went to the metal scrap yard and found a good piece that was big enough. traced it so that it was all straight cuts on the sheetmetal break, and I tipped one of the workers like $4 to bend the flanges for me right quick. I used a large round pipe that was in the scrap yard and my knee to help bend the larger part of the curve and a smaller diameter pipe to do the smaller curve. Then came home and just trimmed it and welded the 2 pieces together. Probably spent about $15.00 total, and it works pretty good.

  21. Thanks for the compliments, like I said I like building so it was a fun project.
As far as the patent goes I already did by posting pictures...lol If any one wants to copy it I realy don't care, sharing ideas is what it's about.
About the car it's going in, nothing special just some parts I had and some I didn't that I put together to try and look like something other than a turd..lol

Now that's what I like, creativity and outside the box.

Great job, and the roadster is waaaaaaay cool.

  23. Dam!!! I just spent most of the day bending up this trany. cover over the edge of my work bench. I really like what you did w/your old oil pan. I have always been a day late and a dollar short. Bob

It worked for me. I would have posted it but I just figured everyone would dog me out for taking the easy way out. Makes it a little tight down near the pedals on my A. It works for me though. Its a little dirty right now.
