  2. That's why you don't go to Chicago. Last time I was at McCormick Place for the Chev-vettefest thing, they wouldn't let people drive their own cars in, they had to let these filthy maintenance men drive their prize possesions in...becauase they were "union". Then they couldn't even plug their own extension cords in, had to have a "union" electrician plug a simple cord into a 110 outlet. Everyone was rude, parking was $12.00 and no where on the street to park cheaper , even the handicapped, the meters were bagged "no parking, will be towed". Never again. Nothing but collusion & extortion in Chicago.

Lets take this a half/step higher.

The CARS are the STARS...without them the promotors would not have a show. Why do we, the exhibitors have to pay so much ( NSRA, Good Guys, and WOW) to display our cars? The size of the spectator crowd and the coresponding admission fees($12 at WOW Milw) should make enough money for the greedy promotors. They should pay us for highly desired cars, and to balance out a show if necessary. How about free food and free soda/beer? Why not treat the people right that are making you money?

Some of our local shows recognize this and keep the costs to a bare minimum($10). Now they won't even let you stand/sit by your cars? Adios

They've been very cool to us. The union carpenters just had to be there with us since we had ladders. They helped hold up a wall, which was very helpful. We built all the walls ourselves. They hooked up our electric and split.

Someone did move the rpu for some reason. That's bogus.

That happens more than you would think. One of my former co-workers had his blown 69 Chevelle in a display (for the speedshop I worked at) and they moved it across the aisle.

If something is not where it should be (or where they think it should be) it will get moved...

Looking at it with some inside knowledge... I don't think I'd bring a high dollar show car in unless it was in a large static display (main entrance type cars)

12 bucks to get in? What a bargin. If you want to go look at the cars here, you will pay $20.00 to get in...count your blessings!!

and I have seen the union workers do just the opposite too and wait to change a light bulb, which entails bringing in a highlo, till the owners of the cars underneath said lights can be contacted to move their cars out themselves so no damage occurs.....at Detroit's Autorama.

Once, I was standing there in Cobo Hall during set up, a worker on a highlo asked my buddy Bob to move his AC Cobra, Bob did and while the worker was changing the light something sliped and the huge bulb came crashing down and gl*** went everywhere.

Accidents happen, lets hope the RPU was moved for it's own safety.

Hummm ... this is a NEW "twist!"

After attending 34 years - and entering many of them - of the WoW's shows here in Calgary; one of the FEATURES is to have the owner standing by their entry, and answer the publics questions; after all, you can only put SO much info on the show card!
(and the odd owner has a chair - or two; standing on a concrete floor for THREE days is hard on the legs and back!! )

Many owners have a "build book" showing the origins and the progress of the creation of their "machine."
Not everyone does it; but the ones that do, seem to receive MORE "Public Choice" votes.

Even the years I haven't put an entry in the show; I still enjoy seeing old friends - standing (or sitting) by their vehicles - as I wander around the show.

  10. Our club display is designed to have the members hanging out in the display and we have never had any problems from the show management in the seven years we have used this setup. However it does state in the ISCA rule book that you are not suppose to be in your display and no outside food or beverages are allowed. This has been there rules for as long as I can remember. Maybe the problem is with the host club management and not ISCA/WOW---I don't know for sure---but I have had problems with the management at some locations but not with ISCA/WOW who in turn made things right for us.

  12. I think we are all going to be of one mind on this one.

I can understand the lawnchair and beer thing I guess. Even the food as they are trying to make a buck on the concessions.

But if I'm going to pay to get into a show I want to be able to talk to the owner/builder about the car as much as see the car.

I can't believe they are useing someone elses car to make a buck and not giving the owner some simple concessions like being able to talk to people who are interested in the car.

Well its no biggy for me they don't have a beater cl*** so I'm sure I'll never get accepted anyway.:D

    Edit damnit.

In answer to a couple of questions about consistancy I kknow that the World of Wheels is sponsored in whatever town it lands in. For instance here in KC one of the big sponsors is a local car club. Could be that the locals make up the rules from one place to the next.

I know a few years back I was shooting an article on the MO Road Ratz for a smaller magazine. they knew I worked for a magazine and tried to make me leave my camera outside. They said no press p*** no camera( and I was paying admission). Fortunatly I know a bunch of people in KC so I went back out to the street and gave my camera to one of the local ladies with a big purse then hooked up with here and her husband on the inside.

Ok I may get sued over this one. hope no one more important than you guys are reading this.:D

Beats me. Years ago (speaking generally - and only about the area I live) we had a local car show that charged you NOTHING and only charged the spectators. I guess they figured if a couple hundred cars could bring in a few thousand people then the car owners were such a small percentage they could "throw us a bone" by letting us in for free. They ended this and I stopped going. Other Shows used to charge teh owners full boat, BUT they would give us a goody bag - usually it was filled with an event shirt - and some sample auto products that when combined would easily be MORE than what you paid - again they "threw us a bone". Last year I went to the g***er reunion - I paid $125 (or something like that) and made 2 or 3 p***es due to the weather - no shirt - no goody bag - no rain check. It was a three day event - I missed Friday - got 2 p***es Saturday - rained out Sunday. This year my dragster should be done - but scew it - I'm gonna take it out on some off nights - 10 bucks sure beats the hell out of $125. I digress

My point was/is that the show promoters USED to be very appreciative of the guys who brought out their cars - They USED to throw a bone - those days seem to be fading fast - and rightly so I suppose as there is no lack of cars and we might as well admit it - it's a business. Can't say that I blame them - I just don't agree with it.

Indoor car shows.... eeeek.... You guys can get drunk and piss all over the floor while wearing your HAMB shirt for all I care... :)

Even the best indoor car shows bore the **** out of me. I just don't get them... at all...

  17. This is definatly a bummer for those involved, that has always part of the fun of the Big show here in Detroit.

I haven't heard anything about not letting the owners hang out by the car, but we did talk about the drinking and all the emptys in the displays.

It was gonna be made clear that is it a family show and please use discretion in your display, and people will be checking in to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

I will check with the show people and find out what I can and hopefully this is not going to be a problem for us.

I do know it has been a practice of the Oakland Roadster Show that you don't sit in the displays once the show has started, The show chairman in Detroit was telling me that one day and said he liked the fact that we didn't do that.

It very well could be a union thing too.

Where I see the problems coming in is where folks have visable beer cans in their hands, beer cans laying all over their "displays" etc. (Not you Dave, just a general statement) This was an issue downstairs at the Detroit Autorama last year and folks were asked to keep it "under wraps" so to speak, and from what I saw everyone did their best to comply with the wishes of management. Pour your beer into a gl*** and problem solved. Try not to get loud and offensive during show hours. There are familys with children around. A little respect does have to be shown.....and if you are going to get falling down drunk and obnoxious at a indoor car event, take off your HAMB shirt.;) :D__________________

No owners around....Thats the one thing that really pissed me off at the GNRS when I went last year. Yes, the cars are the attraction. But there were a few cars that I would've liked to known more about. No chance to learn more if no one's around. The promoters are being shortsighted if they enforce this. The more people (esp young people) we get interested, the better off the hobby is.

I think it a car show should be put on respectfully to the owners of the car and the atendee's of the show. Regulations (especially at a high vis show such as WOW) on alcohol and food and drinks in and around the car area shold be enforced. It is a family event for all who participate. With that being said, I paid to take my car to the WOW show last year here in Atl. It was a good experience overall with a few minor exceptions. Everything was regulated but you weren't h***led to any extent other then what you were informed of when you took your car down to the show. If you didn't follow the rules then you were asked to leave the show. The lawn chairs and coolers didn't really come out and if they did they were, it was out of the way of the onlookers. If they had questions they would ask. But all in all no one got in any ones way.

indoor shows may be more dear to the midwestern and north/east coast folks that don't have driving weather 10 months of the year. i looked forward to the break in the middle of parka season, it's a chance to catch up with all our car buds, even if it cost 15.00 just to get in the door. there's no show this year in st louis, they couldn't get the date or the space they wanted. we're going to tulsa, not 'cause it's the closest, the big money is the draw. i hope we can drink some beer tho'...:)

  24. So its a good thing you didn't get your truck in....cause they didn't allow fire arms either?! (just kidding)

These indoor shows have way too many rules and restriction, but you can always find some fun with out too much trouble?!

Indoor shows are our way of seeing new stuff and curing cabin fever.
I think looking at the same thing over four hours is boring though. I'd rather be in the garage and watch that same four hour period p*** in an instant.
This past weekend I was invited to take the 34 to the first indoor show I have ever had a car in. It was a 3 day show. I spent a total of 3 hours there the whole weekend. About 1-1/2 looking at other stuff and the rest setting around. BORING!
I still enjoy going to them. Us winter folks have no other release.
In the 50's the indoor shows were the cream of the crop the only organized shows. I was invited again to another show in Cleveland this year. i will probably take the 34. Its a new experience. But I can see how that will wear out fast. Come On SUMMER!

  27. It ****s at these "big" shows when you can't have someone by your car. There's always someone who wants to stick their head inside it looking at it while wearing a coat with a metal zipper or gold chains rubbing on a paint job you worked your *** off to look good. Or lean on the ropes and pull down one of the stanchions, usually right onto the car or damn close. Then there's the "souvenir collectors"... I think you should be allowed to stay by your car.The promoters aren't paying anybody to look after it.It does make sense to keep the beers out of sight though. How about the promoters giving everyone free insulators?

Here's my 2 cents. I just got back from the Cavalcade of Customs in Cincy. I put the car in Wednesday evening between 5:00 and 6:00 pm with my gas tank below 1/4 fuel level and disconnected my battery. I spent most of Thursday cleaning off the road salt I picked up on the way to the show on Wednesday. We were told no coolers but were allowed to spend time around our cars if we liked. Most spectators were walking around viewing the cars with a cold "bottle" in their hands the entire weekend. Many questions came from the spectators to the owners of the cars. Entry fee was $50.00 and that included 2 weekend p***es for admission for the 3 days. Other weekend p***es were $15.00 for the entire 3 days. These had to be purchased at the time of registration. I enjoyed the weekend but like Petejoe says there's a lot of standing (or sitting) around.

I never understood the concept of you having to pay to enter your car, and then the promoters using your car to attract other poeple too make money off them.

The promoters should be giving the car owners a cut of the action. Or at least let them sit by their cars.
