Painting my Wifes 58 Edsel Wagon. DOing the inset in the roof and the cove on the side between the trim in Black. I really wanna do flake in it. I was thinking BLack FLake over black paint. The insets have to be black, i want the contrast. and the interior is already redone in black. I need advice in FLake, What kind? id like the bigger flake. so it jumps out at ya more. Looking for just some general advice, what Size flake, where to get it.. Ive never done this before. and id like some examples... Im stuck on the black color though, but not the kinda flake. any help is appreciated. heres a pic of the car so you have an idea... its already lowered about 4 inches all the way around. all the white on the outside is whats gonna be black, and the rest of the car is gonna be the factory sunset coarl color.
Black Flake over Black should be interesting, dont think I have every seen that. With that color combo I dont think your going to need the Giant "b*** boat " flake but thats going to be a personal thing. Anyway with the big flake you may have to drill out the tip of your spray gun (or buy a larger tip ) to shoot the flake. You want to mix the flake with the mixed and reduced clear, maybe 2or 3 coffee scoops per gun cup full, to much and you'll plug the gun up. Test shoot on a s**** pannel or the garage wall! If not enuff flake is coming out and it isent pluging up add a little more but not to much. You can turn up the air pressure a little to help it along but to much and the flake will bounce off the car without sticking. Med. and smaller flake will lay down fairly smooth but with BIG flake it some times will stand up on edge. when this happens you want to let it tack up a little past the stringgie stage and press it down with the palm of your hand till it's flat ( this is why you should have s**** pannel being painted at the same time to see if it's dry enough to press without doing it on your car!) When its tacked up enough spray on another coat and repeat the process till you have the coverage of flake you like. While thats setting up go mix some clear without flake in it. It's going to take 5 or 7 coats to cover Med or small flake and 8 to 10 or more to cover large flake. Now if you want it to look killer, let the car sit for about a good week, perferable in the sun to get the clear to srink. at this point the surface will feel a little rough. Now you can wet sand CARFULLY with 800 making sure not to brake the clear and hit the flake itself (this will dull it). Get out the old spray gun again and lay down 3 or 4 or 5 more coats of clear, let that sit a day or so and wet sand with 1000 and resand with 1500 and then buff with with a lite compound and then with a coat of glaze. 3-M has some good stuff as does Meguiar's (No.7). As far as were to buy it?, I go on ebay were you get the best deal, paint supply stores are going to hit you bout $ 50 or more for a small jar for House of Kolor. Now I dont know if I should even tell you this so if it fukes up dont blame me but rescently we discovered that craft store flake(glitter) and automotive flake are made out of the same stuff!!!. We've painted 3 bikes a car of ours and they look great so far, one of the bikes was painted about 11/2 years ago and it's holding up just fine!!! that large "flake" was $2 a jar. I'm not telling ya ta use that flake (Glitter) It's up to you, not sure what the long term wear will be???. Anyway hope this was a little bit helpful. FLAKE AWAY MY MAN !!!!
I'm no expert... but I would either spring for the House Of Kolor chip book (Eastwood has it for $60 I think) or just start spraying some test panels. Either way, look at them on a curve in the sunlight. I was surprised how much even just the mini-flake "pops". The HoK book also has some cool chips where they mix Kandy and flake on top of their base coats to give you some ideas.
Roth flake do a nice black flake called greasy black and its quite large.. Heres a photo of a surburban i did in Roth gold flake.
If you go with straight up black the effect will be mild and I wouldn't expect lots of bling as with other colors..old school flake has shifty black and we have spina's black powder which will bling for ya even in the night....If you want I could make you up our monster greasy black and customize it so that it kicks!!..hope this helps http://www.rothmetalflake.com
You can use a silver flake with some black candy over it and that will give you a very dramatic effect.
I am in agreeance with ab supply, black flake on black isnt really going to pop as much as say red flake on black. I like to stick with the same colors that im using on the rest of the car. Maybe find somehting close to the coral you're spraying on the rest of the car.
