A while back I posted a pic of a 49 Merc I used to own.A few of you asked for more pics.I had a chance to take a few pics of the car a week or so ago.The guy that owns the car now is a freind of mine, and it stayed local.Whe I had the Merc,it was powered by a nasty SBC that I had built several years ago.The new owner had bigger and better plans than I did......it now has a MONSTER BB in it,ans I prommised I would not disclose the particulars,so thats all I can say.The car will get street raced often(driven by me),so the times and detailed info wont be avaliable fo a while.

Do that to a '55 Chevy, or better yet, to nothing at all... But not a '49 Merc!!! *Yuck*

I guess you guys are alowed to have an oppinion.I bought the car with most of the work done. This car was never ment to be a custom,IT IS A RACE CAR.None of the things you guys piss and moan about are for show, this car gets down,on the street or on the track.Im kinda glad none of you like it....makes it all the more cool.

Didn't mean to offend!! But if you put a car up here and ask for opinions (on a mainly traditional rodders forum) You should know what kind of reaction you are gonna get. I think it is a good lookin' car in its own way but personally I would have dug that car w/ fender skirts hiding the big *** tires and muffle it down and make a real sleeper/cruiser sittin' about 3in off the ground just my 15 cents

Yea dude,I get it.....Im not offended. This is the net,and anytime you get on the net, someone is gonna have a diffrent oppinion than yours. Its cool, you guys can think what ever you wanna think, thats life.I actualy posted a pic of the car in another thread about street racing on this forum, and several people PM me and asked for more pics,so they got them.So I guess what Im trying to say is,I wasnt asking for anyones opinion,I was just showing a car I used to own.

i'm sorry and i dont want anyone to take what i say offencively, but it does seem a bit toy-ish..if that's a word..before this thread gets closed down for name calling i just felt like saying if it'd been done a little more conservatively,it could have been pulled off more tastefully..such a big car as that with all those body lines doesnt make sense as a hot rod to me..more weight, something big and heavy meant to be a LUXURY car turned into a HOT ROD?a deuce or something makes more sense because it looks better stripped down..this thing just looks like you added stuff to it..and i know the bigger tires and flames are kinda cool, but personally i wouldnt put them on that car..the flames make your eyes look at the step in the body panels and go "..that doesnt flow right!" i think ghost flames would have been a better choice..my question that everyone else didnt ask is if it's a merc, why a BBC instead of a BBF?i think some fatter tires on the back of a merc like that wouldnt be too bad if you didnt make it so DRASTIC..almost looks like you're TRYING to say "it's a hot rod, dammit! it IS!!" you dont need flames and a scoop to make something a hot rod..if it runs fast it could be one.you're mad because everyone says it's not a hot rod and you say it is..to you it may be,but to the majority of us who have commented,it's a big car with flames on it..if it's your car, that's great.hope you're happy with it..i think it would have been better if you made it into an old race car like the hudson hornet or something similar.they're not saying your car's not fast cuz we cant prove that.we just say it doesnt look like a hot rod..just because you CAN do something doesnt mean you SHOULD or that EVERYONE should..but if YOU want to,that's yer business, sonny

Who cares what people want to do with "THIER OWN CAR" I mean if we all did the same thing it the shows would be pretty lame it would be like looking at this years honda civics they are all cloned just different colors. I think its pretty cool in this months hot rod mag they have a black four door merc all raced out. dont forget thats this persons merc so he can do what he wants with his own money if you want to do something else buy one = ) just my two cents

what if every artist painted the same way? art wouldnt really be art would it?

HaHaHa,this place is funny.Hot rod 54 chevy, did you read any of the post? The car was pretty close to the way you see it in the pics BEFORE I bought the car.I did not build the car.I did make lots of changes to it after I purchased it,but I didnt hack it up,not that I wouldnt, just that I didnt.
Toy-is,no one had ever described the car that way to me.I guess thats ok.Why would you want to build a car conservatively? This car was a drag car when I bought it.By that I mean drag race only. Most of the time,a race car is suposed to look like a car from the stands. This car had a full tilt gl*** front end that someone hand laid, the quaters were gl***,so was the trunk. Those "bigger tires" you refered to were D.O.T. slicks, hooked to a 513 geared 9 in ford, coil overs and 4 link. Why you ask,so it would hook up.
The flames everyone rags on were layed out by my girlfreind, who had never done any before,in about 10 minutes.Once again, why you ask, because the guy that bought the car from me asked her to.
Your next question was why a BBC?I will tell you why, basicly, because thats what the new owner wanted to put in it.All I can figure as far as a reason,is he felt that would make it faster.Mabey you guys are lookin at the car all wrong. The only thing Merc about the car is the roof and parts of the doors. Its a tube frame,BBC,power glide, with a parts of a 49 merc stuck on top.

You say Im mad because everyone says this or that.I think you are wrong.I am not mad, ffor several reasons.First I dont even own the car anymore, second,I could give a **** about whayt you think, and third.....well I dont have a third reason.

But I tell you what,I know how to prove its fast, get your self some money together, get your self a hotrod, let me know when and where, and my pal who owns the car will come race you,on the street or at the track, and we'll find out.
    Thanks for you opinion,

I think the car is cool. It would look better without the flames but honestly, if a guy wanted to make a traditional custom out of it, it wouldnt really take much.

how many pro-street 49 Mercury coupes are there? I like it.

Hell yeah- When I was in 8th grade, this was THE car I would have drawn on notebook paper in science cl***. I also thought the "Cobra" movie was bad ***.

Since then, customs have taken over my brain. I think of Mercs in a different light now, and I am pissed at the production company for "Cobra" that ruined a bunch of potential cars as custom Merc fodder for the rest of us.

    My tastes changed...

There is a lot of work that went in to that car, and I can apreciate it from that standpoint. Would I want to race it? Hell no.

If I already had a Merc custom and needed a Merc race car would I build this? Probably, so I'd have one for any situation.

    To each his own...'nuff said.
