Does anyone know how to convert a 6 volt 8BA gen to twelve volt operation? I already have the voltage regulator. AND NO I DON'T WANT AN ALTERNATOR. I wanna do this right. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can get away with just swapping in 12 fields from a later ford generator. To do it right, you should put 12V fields and a 12V armature in it. Course, we can do it for you too. :D

If you're only running lights, gauges, & maybe a simple radio, you'll be fine with just the feild coils from a '56-64 Ford. Be aware that some generators are longer than others - I think these were the higher output ones. I look for late '50s cars - seems like the early '60s ones are the ones that come in two sizes.

You'll put out slightly less current if you leave your 6V armature in there, but if you're not trying to light up a city, you should be fine (basic lights, gauges, simple radio). If you've got power anything, start looking at an alternator...or powermaster to keep the look

Just leave the generator alond. generators are "stupid" devices that only do what you tell them. A 6V generator is more than capable of charging a 12V system. While testing, I have personally had my 6V '55 Plymouth genny putting out 17V and 70 amps:eek:  You can almost weld with that much power. That same generator was loaned to a friend for her 12V '59 Dodge, and it charged her car for almost a year. now it's back on my 6V plymouth and running strong.

I'm surprised it didn't desolder the fields with that much power coming out of it....
