Well I got my 36 Ford 5 window coupe home, and it is in decent shape. One of my main goals is to get the frame/suspension sorted out. It has a tube drop axle, the spring mounts are welded on the front of the axle... plus it looks like they cut the shock mount off of the wishbone. My first thoughts are that the wheelbase has been altered by this modification. I am new to straight axles, and have only installed complete kits - I have no idea where to go from here.. Should I get a spring hanger from Speedway and move the spring above the axle? Plus are the frame mounts stock, or are they aftermarket? Any idea about the brakes? Thanks for any insight..
Is the crossmenber that the spring is attached to original or has it been changed? I Have a complete 35/36 front end including un cut bones if you need em? Im curious if they changed the crossmember. The way that axle is attached to the spring is way scary please dont drive it like that I dont want to here you died because it broke! LTR Dave
Thanks Dave i cannot tell if the crossmember is moved, I will take a better look tomorrow. I hate to cut up another 35-36 front end if I can salvage whats left of this one... There is no way I would ever drive this, it is friggin scary...
That certainly is scary. It looks to me like the spring/crossmember is in the correct place. If so, I'd replace that setup with Studhud's 36 axle. There are plenty of guys here who drop axles if you want to drop it some.
That spring hanger ranks right up there with some of the scariest **** I've ever seen.LOL The brakes and spindles look vaugely Chevrolet ish. Kinda hard to tell.
I would say that you could change the spring mount on your axle to something better but why? Un cut bones are probably better than split onesespecially on a 35 or 36. The stock spring mount off the stock bones isnt a bad set up it works very well. If it were mine I would Just drop a stock axle and go back to the stock un split bones? LTR Dave
