anybody used this stuff for heavy filling like it says its good for?...im shaving the belt line off my car and need a little more filler than i wanted to fill ...but the paint rep says its the best he's ever seen ..cause it doesnt shrink at all..can anyone back him up...
If the filler needs to be that deep, I'd strongly consider cutting out what you want to fill and replacing it with metal. I know that's easy for me to say, not having to do the job... How deep do you need the filler to be? I'd be concerned covering a large area like a body line that things would 'fall apart' at a later time, especially if it's too thick or mixed wrong. I've never used the stuff you're talking about, but I've always heard the key to getting filler right is to make sure you give it plenty of time to cure before primer and paint.
Don't go any thicker than 1/4". Rage Xtreme is the creamiest filler that Evercoat makes. Meaning it is the runniest. It is a great product for what it is designed for which is not filling deep areas. If you are going deeper than 1/4" you should use a reinforced filler. That being said you would be even better off doing as oldcarmike said and replace the metal.
That filler has a real creamy consistency. It spreads easily and usually doesn't have pinholes. The only drawback is because of its consistency,it tends to sag, requiring more than one or two applications to build it up to level.Try gettin that metal worked out better and then use a skim coat!
..what im doing is shaving the belt line..on a 54 chevy belair..you no how its raised then dips in on each side of the belt line..i guess its about 1/4'' or so...the paint rep says and the label says its for heavy filling..shut you cant build regular rage gold up 1/8''with no problems..i was curious to see if anyone has used it for filling deeper than average
Not wanting to start an arguement but I just went and read the can and nowhere on it does it say it is good for heavy filling. I can send you the product information sheet that says Max thickness sanded 1/4" if you want. Body fillers are not designed to be used any deeper than 1/4". Some guys might do it, some might even get away with it but I wouldn't want to take the chance of it cracking under my paint for the sake of saving a step. If you don't want to fill with metal use a reinforced product first. It will add more stength to the repair. Evercoat's Fibertech would be a good choice. It has multiple fiber types in it and can be spread quite thin and still retain it's strength. Hope this doesn't come across as being an ass that's not my intention just would hate to see you use a product for something that it is not designed for and have it come back to haunt you later on when it will cost much more to fix.
im sorry dude ..your right..i was thinkin of the rage gold not the extreme.....i have both gold and extreme..sorry bro
No need to apologize. I wouldn't go any thicker with the Gold either. It's thicker so you can put it on a bit heavier but it is still only recommended to go 1/4". The info sheet on Gold says "For structural repairs prone to high degrees of stress and flexibility use a fibre reinforced filler." I'm not sure that I would call what you are doing structural but I would say it's more than cosmetic. Just my opinion.
i measured the gap i have to fill..its under a 1/4 just by a kunt hair..but im still gonna think about using the fiber filler..also im gonna wait till the weather gets warmer..theres tons of other work that needs to be done..thanks for all the info
i never use more than about 1/8 inch thick on filler..but thats what I was taught...and my preference I guess... I've used both and they're very good products...
