Are there any 16" steel wheels that I could be looking for in a late model junk yard? Not too wide.....6" wide would be ideal.....late Ford and Mopar 4 1/2" bolt circle, 5 stud.....with the outside nubs to hold on dog dish 53 Ford style small hub caps. Also they would for sure have to be void of any cooling type holes, just a plain wheel. Thanks
Most of the "modern" 16" wheels are "mags". There may be some 16" steel spair tire versions out there, but they will likely have brake cooling holes or slots. Many new wheels have the front drive offset. The 4 1/2" bolt pattern may be another issue, most newer stuff is metric bolt pattern. Good luck. Gene
Thanks,Gene By modern I was thinking 1990's or even 1980's....stuff that's hitting the junk yards. Maybe pick-up trucks and suv's.
i think astro and safari vans had a 16 or 17inch space saver spare, although it doesnt have a center to accept caps and are 4inches wide >< but they look awsome.
Please dont flame but .... If I remember right Porsche had some really cool looking narrow 16"x 6" spares on 911's (I know the pattern is different). Don't remember the years but they were basic flat with a raised section with 1.5" holes and looked great. the offset would be perfect for a rod..If I find a pix I will post...
Kool, do they run small hub caps on the cop cars? Or more importantly do the wheels have out side style hub cap nubs?
not to rob our thread but has any one used wheel adapters to go from small ford bolt patten hubs to lage pattern wheels was to run 32' or 40' wheels on an 8in rear and disk breaks in front
I am going through the same search for my '53 F100 and have found few choices in new steel rims (5x4.5 16"x6"). But I was pointed to some Wheel Vintiques product that I found on the Summit site Link http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1∂=WVI%2D12661204&N=700+4294923105+4294906458+115&autoview=sku Part # WVI-12661204 Not a bad price plain and they are made to accept the late 40s style Ford caps. A PS there are also some 'taller' modern tires that look somewhat authentic i.e. Avon 205 85R16 was mentioned. It looked good on a F1 p-up. PPS my '53 has a non-stock bolt pattern ....
the caprice steelies on police cars are the big pattern if i recall. The fords are the norm, atleast the ones i got.
the mopar lhs has a 4.5 bolt pattern. 16 inch about 8 inch wide and most of the offset is to the inside. Also some of the larger GM V6 front wheel drive have 4.5 bolt pattern.I have many used on trailers. Used tires are plentiful and most of the time free for hauling them off. I would p*** as you will have a clearnce problem on a old car.
Front drive wheels have small center holes and will not fit on rear drive hubs, they might fit on the rear, but not on the front. We have had several Intrepids, I know, we tried. Gene
I bolted up an Intrepid 16" wheel and an Explorer (same as Crown Vic) 16" wheel to the front of my car for mock-up. The Explorer wheel is 16x7 with pretty close to zero offset (3.5" backspacing). I don't know what the offset or size is on the Intrepid wheel but it sure ****ed pretty far into the wheelwell. Don't think that one is going to work. I'm running a Mustang 2 (aftermarket) front suspension with the 11" brakes and both wheels mounted up fine.
16" x 4" Jeep Cherokee wheels. They have 4 cooling holes but they are so small that they are hard to notice. Found in all Grand Cherokees and some Cherokee sports. 5 x 4½" pattern. (2000 jeep wheel) Chrysler mini-van wheel, not sure of the year though. They have a large dish and look like a space-saver. Side by side comparison. Jeep wheel left, Minivan right. The one recourse you have to add a dog-dish cap would be either to weld a lip using some brake tubing or fabricate clips that screw to the wheel. Late model fords have a special lug nut that has a raised ridge that captures a spring clip to retain a plastic center cap. I guess one could tack weld the clips to the back of a cap and have the caps held on that way.
