The 421 hauls ass

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Jan 28, 2007.

  1. For a first time blast, we're lookin pretty good. My friends Gasser 46 Sedan Delivery (yellow that ran at Mooneyes) has gone 12 teens in the 1/4 with a very bad 60 ft time due to "period" slicks. This tells me, it's got the power to run high 11's. Anyway, on the way to GNRS yesterday morning we blasted it on that street that runs along side the famed Pomona Drag Strip. We left dead even, i pulled him a 1/2 fender in 1st and 2nd gears, all the way through 3rd he had a fender on me, and at the top of 3rd (both 4-speeds)we let off for traffic. So, i'm confident i'm DEEP in the 12's anyway you look at it. For a 1st time blast with a nasty distributor i pulled off the shelf, no curve, timed by ear, and the 800 Holley off my Vette, i'm fucking happy. PS-i'm pump gas, 3.50 gears. My opponent, race gas compression, 4.88 gears.

I still miss my 66 2+2. One of the best cars I ever had and it would make lots of "smaller" muscle cars see only tail lights. 421's are great.

421 Pontiacs run hard for sure. Dad pulled the 389 and put one in the 61 Catalina he had. 3:73 gears and 4 speed. That thing hauled ass for a daily driver. Was a fun car..

What cam are you running in your 421? That 4 inch stroke is a nice compromise between the 400 and 455's. I am running a 428 with those same #62. Are you having any trouble running yours on pump gas? Mine barely likes this 91 octane.

  16. I've been beating on it pretty good with no trace of knock on pump gas. Even at 200 on the gauge. My friend's (Mike Slover)pretty good at rolling back some combustion chamber edges on these things. I'll give him credit for that.

  17. PS- i'd like to add that my car's pump gas, w/3.50 gears. My opponent is race gas compression, w/4.88 gears!

  18. hope you stayed under the speed limit, wouldn't need another ticket..:)

  20. I was wondering if someone caught that! But, I couldn't resist. I had one foot on the clutch, and the other ready to kick myself in the ass

What's the 421 in ??...the Green machine behind it ?

    The last 421 I built was punched out to a 440..with that shorter stroke than 455 it would get the RPM's up in a hurry....and still had that Poncho torque..loved it...and I was just running a stock Mac K.#8 cam...that old 65 2+2 (4-speed) would Get-R-Done .
    Very nice looking motor Groucho...

groucho, what type of rear end are you running in the car? 9",12 bolt, 57-64 olds/poncho ?
421's being right in the middle i'd step it up a notch and run 3.90 gears !

  26. 9 inch. The 3.50's a compromise, so i can drive anywhere. Bako this March, Paso w/temp motor 1 1/2 years ago, etc.

  27. I'm surprised it's not chock full of smartass replies... I let that one slide.

    Thanks,
    Kurt
