I remember seeing a lot of those style sun tachs in commercial applications, large trucks (gas powered) flight line snow blowers, that kinda stuff. Most of them didn't rev that high though. Nice score and you got me thinking about a different type of gauges for my A, particularly after spending several hours in the Warhawk Air Museum last weekend.
Could have lots of industrial uses. I would call the company. Maybe someone there knows an old timer that worked with that model, years ago. Sun Instrument USA Inc. Private Company, Headquarters Location Mount Holly, NC 28120 United States (704) 827-6306 , (704)827-6306 fax
anybody got a green line tach?? seen as we are talking about stewart warner gauges got all but this one . thanks trodz
The ultimate tach IMO is the Don Garlits tach with the painted stars and stripes cup... what I'd do for one is beyond the law anyways, I think it's safe to say Ryan has a Tach fetish.
Here is a place in Michigan that also offers rebuilding of the old tachs.. http://www.bobsspeedometer.com/bobs/
I know fire engines from the 40's-50's sometimes had sun tachs on the back for the pumps, and maybe even inside for the engine. My friend has several he got from a few 1947 Ford fire trucks that were in the junkyard. I paid $11 for my circa '57 sun football tach from a place that sells used equipment and tools. It was with a bunch of air pressure and liquid filled gauges. My best guess is it was on a generator, forklift, or some other piece of old industrial equipment.
Ryan, I think the sun unit came off one of their old test units. Like a gen test bench or engine tester. I have seen those on some early test equipment before.
I know this ones only a 5,000, but he seems to know a little about them........ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Vintage-SUN-5-000-Tachometer-Gauge_W0QQitemZ290078324319QQihZ019QQcategoryZ10076QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Both of my Chris-crafts have that tach in them. They came like that from the factory. Could be that they had a surplus after WWII. My boasts are a 48 and 49. Both are flathead powered. I think i remember seeing one on a PT boat ill see if i cant find the pictures.
What about tech on Tachs???? How to hookup your vintage S/W or SUN...or even Dixico tach's in a tech article for newbies and old greasers....I've seen sun tachdrive units and etc and someone told me you have to be sure you have the correct sending unit. Correct? Thoughts...
Bill Cudney of Cudney Racing in Blenhiem, Ontario...his background is in electronics but he's currently in the snowmobile biz. He speaks well versed in tachs of all kinds. Might be an aside for him to convert for you guys and be priced right. My dealings with him in the past were always a pleasure and he's a really fair guy. FWIW it might be worth a look.
Yes but read ther listing again. He says it's used but like new, then goes on to say later that the wiring harness is factory installed and never used. So which is it new or used?
I don't have time to read through all the replies, this may be old info...but these guys might know something, they redid a transmitter for me years ago. http://www.williamsons.com/
I'm an aircraft mechanic, and have seen this tach on old ground units, such as starter generators, tugs, and even ww2 searchlight generators, typically this units were powered by flathead sixes (mostly Mopar) and ocasionally chrysler industrial Hemis, I've also seen a very similar tach in a bell 47 helicopter of the Korean War vintage.
Hey Ryan.... Damn Spike beat me to it. Rod & Kulture Issue #8 (I'm really loving this mag) sitting on his dash of **** Lewis '40 coupe. Thinking that black bakelite looking tach might look sweet in a '38 as well. Not to hijack your post but - Im kinda running a problem for my '34. I have an 50's 8 cyl SW round chrome tach but since I'm running the dual coil ignition, I should have a 4 Cyl tach? Or can I run an 8 Cyl tach with and run both coil leads in and just add a diode? Kinda shifting lost in missouri.
I've been watching that style of Sun Tach on ebay for a few days now, and have posted some questions here regarding Sun tachs in general, here are some observations I have made in regards to Ryan's tach- they were available in both panel mounted- and cup mounted- configurations they were available for either the E- series or the EB- series transmitter they were available in 2500, 3500, and 5000 RPM at least one model of this tach was designated "series D" anybody got a SUPER NICE one, 5000 rpm, cup mount, for an EB transmitter, they'd sell? besides Ryan and the one pictured from ebay?
The one with the new looking wiring harness... that's just it, the harness is too new, IMO. Replacemed perhaps?
Mine is actually 6000RPM... Which is what got me so excited. I don't have the tach here yet, but am already having fun trying to figure out a suitable column mount...
Don Dillard's tach in his roadster is an 8000 RPM version, and like Ryan pointed out, his is a 6000, so there were many variations.
the one of mine I posted a pic of is a model D-3 and requires a model E transmitter. I don't think you're correct as far them as being dash or cup specific. You take one out of the cup and it would mount in the dash with the same 4 screws that hold it in the cup. You look at the one in Dons roadster and you will see this is the way it's in there.
One similar to yours Ryan on ebay right now; http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Vintage-SUN-5-000-Tachometer-Gauge_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ10076QQihZ019QQitemZ290078324319QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW $150.00 so far but not too much detail on the background and year.
I agree... I don't think the tach itself is specific to its mount type. what I meant was that they appear to have been sold either as a panel mount or a cup mount, as oppsed to other tachs which may have been sold, say, as cup mount only.
