Who has some pics? My Grandfather built this in the early Fifties <a href="http://photobucket.com/" target="_blank"></a>
I cant see them either..my dad always tells stories about building customs in the 50`s and its kinda funny cause its not what people think about....they knew about Barris etc, but he said most were doing things with bondo and cardboard (fins, continental kits)...just like in the mags of the time...this may be why alot of those cars didnt last. Was looking at some the other day from late 50`s and it shows sculpting parts from bondo/glue/cardboard/fiberglass/poprivets...the hobby has really come along way.
I was looking at an old custom a while backand we pulled the taillight to have a look. It had a 1/4" rod framework with a metal screen that looks like the wire they use on stucko. It was a good job and held up well. I stated pulling my 59 buick down to metal and found some lead work. It's been there since 1972 I know . I am going to leave it alone.
all my grandfathers stories from his cars in the 50's involve crashing them before they were finished.
My car was built in the late 50's. Here is a linkto the earlist photo that I have. This is from a Joplin Newspaper in 1957. http://public.fotki.com/Chopp47/1947-plymouth-custom/ Dennis
Skirt Chaser: Go back to your photobucket account and use the link that's got "" around it, then the pic will come up on the HAMB. -Dave BTW, when I think of "early customs" I'm thinking taildraggers ala Westergard (sp?) or coachbuilt bodies on Packard and other luxury car chassis. Nevertheless, '50s customs can be interesting too.
Yes, I still have it. I found the car on a used car lot in 1977. A good friend saw the car. He called and told me that I needed to go look at this old coupe. He said that he had no clue what it was But it was chopped. I went , fell in love and drove it home. Thirty years later I still drive and have fun with that car. Dennis
Click on the second link, not the one that says photobucket. Its worling for me. Oh well its just a Chevy with caddy 1/4s.
chopp, that is one bad-ass car! i really really like the chop-job on that; it's so damned mean lookin'! makes it inifitely cooler that you've had the smarts to hold on to it all these years! -marx
""Oh well its just a Chevy with caddy 1/4s"".no. it's not just a chevy with caddy quarters, it's a vintage photo of a chevy with caddy quarters, along with a fake 3 peice rear window..I'd like to see the front. vintage photos are cool. even more cool when the car has been modified. and as stated before.. it's an aftermarket fin, they were chrome plated originally, and most people bolted them on. they made them for all sorts of cars. I've seen them for 49- 50s, as well as 51 -52 chevys. saw ONE 51 -52 at turlock last weekend. we couldn't find the other.I had a set for a 49 ford once. new in the box..
If I had a pic of the front I WOULD POST, but I don't, but thanks for the reply. I do have some from early track racing though.
