alright so we've gone threw 600 different ways to get a ***le for your old heap but what im wondering is how do these guys building cars out of ALL new peics get a ***le? there is obviously more 32s on the road then they ever made so how do they get the paper work done? just thinking outloud tim
The California DMV is also wondering the same thing......could mean a big h***le ahead for dudes like Boyd. they may wind up having to ***le them as Kit cars in the future from what I've heard
For them it's easy. Frame comes with a statement of origin and bill of sale. Same for body. Show recipts on everything in the car so the state can tax you. They'll ***ign it a number, put the number on the frame or body in some states and call it a 2005 new construction or in some stated they'll call it a 32 on the ***le. All they care about is collecting taxes on the new ****. It's the original cars and parts that might be stolen that makes it hard for the rest of us.
I don't know about Nebraska but in Wisconsin you have to register it as "special construction". Then before it is approved you have to have it inspected by a state trooper for saftey and stuff. And then if it p***es inspection the state will issue a ***le and vin numbers. It's alot of ******* around. I knew my car wouldn't p*** inspection(no parking brake,no wiper) so it was easier for me to find an original A ***le and byp*** the inspection thing.....Mike
NJ is similar... I've been doing alot of research to figure out how to ***le my ride... seems that you either have to find an old ***le or registration to use or go through a ***le agency which makes up some "creative" do***entation for you to go to DMV with. These "billet" folks probably go though a similar process. Especially since buying they have money to buy the proper do***ents. I believe we also have something called street rod registration which has quite a rigorous saftey examination. Although cars like ours are well built they would probably never p***. Plus the requirements include some modern tech type items we wouldn't want on our rides.. Most of these "billet rides" are probably up to snuff.
IN ColoRODo, a "new" rod can be ***led as to what it "resembles"...if it looks like a '32 Ford, smells like one, sounds like one...rides like one, then, according to the DMV...can be ***led like one....not all that complicated...UNTIL, you try to ***le a REAL car!!! R-

I vaguely remember a feature in SR years ago when Boyd built that yellow rod that looks sorta like a prevue of the Prowler but with a Mishimushi engine in the rear? Anyway the story told about them taking it out on the I-10 for a sneaky little "shake down" run and got nabbed by the CHP for no tags. I thought that a bit fool hardy since Boyd could probably have ut a dealer tag on it, so I ***umed just maybe the DMV was giving him static then about registering the car at all and getting the ticket put it in the order of the court for it to get registered as whatever the officer identified it as on the ticket, maybe over ruling the DMV as to whether it was a real "car" or not... I don't know, all of what I just said is conjecture, but I could just see them making sure the highway patrol officer identified the offending car by whatever numbers they had stamped on it and maybe called it a "33 Ford" on the ticket. Then it would have been quasi-officially "inspected as" Otherwise, what is it? if it's on the road, it has to be something, right? If it's not a car, it doesn't exist, and shouldn't get cited for not existing...any lawyers here following my crazd line of thought? It's not any crazier than a person being MORE "at fault" if their dog bites someone if they have a "viscious dog" sign on their fence... Courts just take that as you knowing you are harboring a dangerous animal..
I went to the trouble of getting a new ***le issued by the "Secretary of Red Tape" here in Michigan for my 1932 5 window coupe back in high school. Like some of the above guys mentioned, it was issued as a "1975 ***embled Vehicle" It was so much trouble, a surety bond had to be obtained, the police had to inspect the new serial number, it had to be weighed, a thousand forms had to be filled out. It had to be reinspected, 50 trips to the sec of state to get the wrong forms, etc, etc, etc. Never again! I use a company in Alabama or I buy an old ***le!
The big dogs are manufactorers= 2005 Boyd, Body style= 32 ford Ect. They ***ume manufactorers are so heavely bonded and insured that they ***ume all parts are legial and company manufactored that ***leing is no problem. Same with most custom motorcycle companys= 2005 OCC Model Harley ect.
Looks like a winner to me Doc. I know that Calif/the DMV has some goofy regs. In '82 I tried to switch my panhead from MO to CA. I had an original MO ***le and the numbers matched. CA said it wasn't stock original and wanted to Blue Tag it. that involved at the time for it to go to the CHPs garage to be completely dismantled and if they could find a single theft number on it that matched something stolen they owned the whole damn bike. Not likely but ya just never know... I made an appointment for 30 days and get me a temp tag. Then made a bat trip back here and renewed my liscence. never tried to liscence it in CA again.
Drive! mag had an article a couple of months ago that talked about the State of Calif. and the Calif. DMV investigating out of state ***le services. The article specifically mentions Boyd as a being part of the State/DMV investigation. If I recall the article correctly.... it has something to do with builders like Boyd selling their cars to an out of state firm. The firm ***les it in a state that does not require an inspection and then sell it back to the builder with a fresh ***le and bill of sale. Bottom line is that the State/DMV want to know where all the tax revenue has gone for all of these "new" cars.

You make a poor ***umption. My model A is not a "Billet ride" and p***es normal inspection in TX. My 55 Stude p***es inspection, All my cars are safe and I did not compromise the look or feel I was after. If you take short cuts and compromise safety please don't drive near me.
Here is the text Car builder to admit DMV fraud Boyd Coddington, of La Habra and Discovery Channel, allegedly turned in fake hot-rod ***les. By ANDREW GALVIN The Orange County Register Boyd Coddington, a La Habra builder of custom cars and star of the Discovery Channel's "American Hot Rod" show, is expected next week to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of submitting counterfeit vehicle ***les to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The allegations against Coddington present a window on a "systemic problem with ***le fraud" within the hot-rod industry that has cost California hundreds of millions of dollars in registration fees, said Robert Morgester, a deputy state attorney general who is prosecuting the case. After having investigated for four years, Morgester estimates that 70,000 custom-built cars are registered in California based on fraudulent out-of-state ***les. These phony ***les misidentify or undervalue the vehicles - stating, for example, that the cars are much older than they actually are, allowing owners to avoid registration fees and smog restrictions. Some hot-rod enthusiasts have disputed Morgester's findings, saying that only a small percentage of hot rods carry illegal ***les. However, Coddington's attorney, Chris Wing, said Morgester's estimate of 70,000 illegally registered vehicles is "probably conservative." Wing will appear Wednesday in Sacramento County Superior Court, where he is expected to plead guilty on Coddington's behalf to a single count of making a false statement to the DMV. Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, Coddington will likely be ordered to pay $3,000 in res***ution and perform 160 hours of community service. Coddington didn't return a call seeking comment. According to court papers filed by Morgester, Coddington obtained three counterfeit Pennsylvania and New York ***les for 1930s-era Ford automobiles, then presented the ***les to Cherrie Fowler, a DMV-licensed verifier. Fowler then submitted the fake ***les to the DMV's Placentia office, the papers say. The DMV issued legitimate California ***les based on the phony out-of-state ***les. The California ***les were ***igned to brand-new, Coddington-built vehicles that were stylized replicas of 1930s-era Fords. Coddington used the ***les to sell the vehicles or award them to contest winners, the papers say. As part of his community service, Coddington is expected to help educate the hot-rod community about the problem of illegally registered vehicles. "What Boyd wants to do is he wants to explain to everybody in the business, because he's kind of a high-profile guy, how you can do this legally," Wing said. Morgester called for the DMV to offer an amnesty period in which owners of illegally registered vehicles could rectify the situation without facing criminal charges. Morgester also said that the DMV needs to change its ***ling procedures so that it can better catch phony out-of-state ***les. Bill Branch, a DMV spokesman, said his agency has "tightened the process to identify vehicles using '***ling mills' or out-of-state registration." Vehicles last registered in certain states must now have their VIN numbers verified by the California Highway Patrol, Branch said.
I think that the deal with guys that run in the same circles with Boyd was not a question of stolen parts or even a saftey issue. From what I gathered they were makeing up false bill of sale IE showing the cost of the car to be way less than it really was. So it was a tax issue. I don't think that the state really cares if we steal from eachother just so long as we're not stealing from them.

The buzz around here was that it was all about taxes. They get a ***le in a state that doesn't require a visual inspection. So they can say it's worth $1K,when it's really a new $150K custom built,shop car. He had a '32 Ford Coupe for sale for $110K,that was valued at $3200. on paper. The state did a pretty good undercover investagation. I also heard that Carol Shelby was involved,because guys were taking Shelby clones and ***ling them in other states,as real Shelbys. He was pissed cause there were more ***led than he ever built. Kinda cool having a friend whos uncle works for state of California investagations.
I used to see a guy at the swapmeet,who sold clear ***les. Never looked into what it was all about. Can you get a clear ***le for a car that was wrecked,or whatever,and use it to ***le your same year car?
How is it Jesse pays 275k and boyd pays 3k for what seems to be a worse crime? I just don't get this ****. The bad part is it seems like the California disease is spreading fast. Soon we'll all drive pod cars and ride electric scooters!
It goes to a place that doesn't make you jump through hoops like a pet dog. If you design the system to prevent a hot rod from being ***led, then you should expect hot rodders to go someplace else first. Simple math.
Going off-topic here... California is bankrupt. They are spending their treasury on illegal alien birthing machines, and are designing their courts and tax system to get money wherever they can. It's all about money now, not about the honest public. The real problem, is that nobody in California votes. Thus they have movie star wanna-be people for the tourists, instead of real accountants. Same people who bankrupted the state keep getting elected. Way to solve it all, is that if you are an illegal alien or on a visa, then birthing anything should not become a citizen.
